http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/may/31/suv-veers-off-sr56-bicyclist-killed/

One bicyclist was killed and another was seriously injured Tuesday night when the driver of a sport-utility vehicle veered off eastbound state Route 56 in Rancho Peñasquitos and into a bike path.

The accident happened about 6:20 p.m. between Camino Del Sur and Black Mountain Road.

Witnesses reported that driver of the SUV, a woman who was not immediately identified, was trying to transition from the No. 2 lane into the No. 1 lane when she lost control and the SUV veered to the right, up a grassy embankment and plowed through the chain-link fence and onto the bike path, said CHP Sgt. John Tyler. The SUV landed on its side.

One bicyclist, a man described as being in his 30s or 40s, died at the scene, Tyler said. The other cyclist, also a man believed to be in his 30s or 40s, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tyler said pedestrians and other bicyclists stopped to render aid until paramedics arrived.

Tyler said the driver also was taken to a hospital. Authorities had not yet talked to her and Tyler said he did not know her condition. An adult male passenger also was in the SUV. His condition was not immediately known.

The cause of the accident was being investigated, Tyler said. The woman was believed to have been driving at freeway speeds, and it was not yet known if drugs or alcohol were a factor, he said.

The bicyclists were also going east and were hit from behind, he said. Both were wearing helmets.

The No. 2 and 3 lanes of the freeway were closed for about 90 minutes, causing a major eastbound traffic backup.

Well something was involved. Changing lanes is really not that difficult.

Poor people and their families. Such a shame.

And people try to tell me that mountain biking is dangerous. I will take my chances any day with the rocks, cliffs, snakes, heat, mountain lions, etc. I feel more in control of my destiny out there.

THIS INFURIATES ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ride that path and am/was likely to commute home tomorrow on it. This actually happened about 5 minutes ahead of me as I was driving home east on the 56 tonight. Traffic suddenly started backing up right before Camino Del Sur about 6:30. I never would have imagined it was some FRIGGIN' IDIOT DRIVER JUMPING THE FREEWAY ONTO THE BIKE PATH! This makes me sick.

Pray for the victims and their families.

And I hope that driver gets sued into oblivion.

Saw it...sat in traffic for an hour. Bizzare....the odds of hitting a cyclist there  .....never felt unsafe riding in that spot ever, but they might consider installing K-rails on the section from Black Mtn to PQ Blvd.......SR56 is a bit close to the path there for comfort.

The driver of the SUV said she was cut off by another driver, and lost control. A few weeks ago there was a truck tire (Cargo Truck) that came off it's axel and smashed throught the fence and ended up on the SR56 bike bath very close to where the accident happened today. Thoughts and prayers for the familys.

So sad, but unfortunately does not surprise me. I've looked at that bike path many times from the highway and thought about how vulnerable people are to any idiot driver. And while riding it I've seen skid marks through the iceplant into bent and torn flimsy chain link fence and felt first-hand how easy it would be to be wiped out there.

The end result will probably be the use of K-rail along practically the whole length. On the plus side, it will be reminiscent of visiting a nearby ecologically sensitive Fish & Game vernal pool preserve.

Completely agree with this statement. Even wearing full armor & a full face helmet, I feel unsafe whenever I have to be on the road for a short amount of time.

Wonder if this is really true or not. If it is, then whoever cut her off should be culpable as well. Hope she wasn't just on her cell phone or something else stupid like that.

Thoughts go out to the families.

Geez... these last few days have been very sombering (is that a word?). My colleague's mom was diagnosed with lung cancer a week or so ago and just gave up... passed away on Friday. My other colleague's wife had a massive heart attack... passed away on Sat while they were sitting on the couch watching tv. And now news of these bikers' deaths.

Nonsense -- even if it's true that she was cut off, she was an absolute moron to leave the road at that rate of speed. When a car is totalled you buy a new one; when a bicyclist is totalled you buy a coffin.

Sympathies to the families & friends of the deceased & injured, first & foremost.

I hope the investigation accurately identifies the cause and justice is served.

We got an e-mail over the weekend that a mother of students at our daughters' school died of a heart attack at home over the weekend...wonder if this is the one? Truly sad in any case. :(

I road ride a lot and this type of news shows how far we have to go as a society in educating drivers. I am always aware of what is happening around me and in fact have found being visually obvious and kind of aggressive helps in traffic, but all it takes is one inattentive moment by a driver...

Sad news indeed.
