I don't know why, but I got this wild hair to take my road bike up to the top of Palomar Mountain. Starting here in Borrego Springs...
Interestingly enough the distance from my house to the observatory is almost exactly 50 miles. I've never done a century before. Lets see, I ride to the top of Palomar, then just coast all the way back to Borrego, Viola! My first century!
What kinda' idiot am I?
Over 8200' of climbing.....descending East Grade Rd (I'm kind of an adrenalin junkie, but that road is sooooo torn up. I can easily say that is the scariest thing I've done on a road bike.) I'm used to descending Montezuma Grade, and that road is as smooth as a babys butt compaird to East Grade.
But I did it!
I'm spent, but can't sleep.

Way to go Rick. Yeah, East Grade has a bunch of choppy sections conveniently located near the bottom, where your arms are about ready to lock up.

Went out to the garage to give the old Tomassini a once over. Both wheels are now out of true. Broken spoke on the front wheel and a bent rear derailleur.
Thats what happens when you beat an old bike!

Been watchin' the tour? that'll motivate those "wilde hairs" with the road bike for sure! Good Job!

No TV motivation. For some reason our new package with our lame cable company doesn't have verses.
Time for DirectTV.

I hear Continental makes some uber light 26" road tires. I always rode my MTB on the pavement until Ben at The Chainring got the Tomassini back up and running. Truth be told, I don't think the road bike is much lighter than my mountian bike and that is the only reason I ride it.

Curious, are you running standard or compact? what cassette do you have? I am currently running compact and 11-23 on mine. was considering running 11-27 to make hill climbs easier.
