The UCI is going to ban radios between team cars and riders. At first I thought this was a good idea, it would take some of the advantage away from the chasers, and maybe the break-a-way guys would have a better chance to win. I find myself cheering for the breakaway, because they work so hard, yet always seem to get caught with less than 5K or 10K to go. All that work all day long for nothing. However after reading an open letter from one of my favorite road racers Jens Voigt, I'm not so sure.

I was thinking the same as you, that it would be a good thing, other side of the coin certainly looks alot better after that read. Curious in this day and age there can't be a middle ground of sorts in regards to the safety, surely they can open lines of communication due to emergencies, unlike the U23 example he gave. If not, leave it the way it is, otherwise we could be listening to Phil liggett as we watch a train wreck happen before our eyes. Not good. Will be interesting how things unfold here leading up to the giro.

Why not just use the radios for emergency only situations? Sounds like Jens is just complaining to me. Hey Jens remember when you didn’t ride on a pro team and you didn't have radios, you just road your ass off every race? Remember when you couldn't sit back in the peloton and wait until the end to push and catch the breakaway beaucse over the radio you knew exactly how far ahead they were? What is happening to professional cycling; no dope and now no radios? You mean they must just have to ride their bikes.

I think they shouldn't even have chase vehicles. They just get in the way. If a rider gets a flat, TFB... shoulda gone tubeless. No radios, no chase vehicles, no epo, no steroids, just adrenalin.... and the motos with the cameras so we see all the action.

I think they should do something in the middle. The NFL has specific rules on how much technology is allowed, and cycling should be the same way.

I think radio feed should be one way, to all riders, with safety bulletins and time gaps. I think this way because I think that reading a race and making tactical decisions when the race is on should be a rider's call, not the team director in the car.

In the NFL, only one player per side gets a helmet radio, and the helmet radio is shut off when the play clock reaches 15 seconds. Just before the play starts, and during the entire play, the players on the field have to decide what to do. The situation now is like letting an NFL coach talk to all players on the field through helmet radio all the way through the entire game.

EDIT: I agree with Jens Voight about circuit stages.
