We shouldn't jump to the conclusion that it was the truck driver's fault.

Bad scene. Freeway offramp crossing on friars we have all passed once.
Wife was bummed to hear the news.
Heartfelt condolences for family

"It appears at this time, that the bicyclist traveled in front of the truck violating his right-of-way and was struck by the commercial vehicle," said San Diego Police Lt. Dan Christman.

That's a terrible stretch of road for bicyclists -- one that I would always avoid when riding from my home in San Carlos out to the coast. Even though it was a good deal longer, I'd take Riverdale off of Friars and jog past the Mission, over to Camino del Rio North, down past Mission Valley shopping center, through the back of Fashion Valley shopping center and then finally get back on Friars at the northwest edge of the golf course.

It appears in this instance the motorist had the right of way, but that place was just an accident waiting to happen. There's a confluence of on-ramps, off-ramps, bike lanes, and traffic merging in both directions, with motorists often moving at least 40 mph faster than cyclists.

The exact spot where this accident occurred is especially bad because traffic going from Friars Road west to the 15 south/8 west transition crosses the bike lane from left to right, and then just up the road to the west the traffic from the 15 south off- ramp crosses the bike lane from right to left. Try navigating that at 20 mph when traffic is closing on you in front and in back, and from the left and the right, at ~60 mph.

that was my first thought as well... I don't know the details and no one will probably know the whole truth, but riders don't always ride the way they should... in my pic of the day post I told of a rider that blew past me as I was sitting at the red light on Pomerado Road this morning... he was just lucky there wasn't a car coming across the intersection... again, I have no idea what really happened in this accident, but it's not always the driver's fault...

my thoughts and prayers are with his family though...

We've all come across drivers that don't see you or had near misses. I got hit on Pomerado by a dui driver, luckily it was only his big side view mirror that hit my back. Hard to forget. I am glad for this driver, hopefully his guilt will be less knowing its not wasn't his fault. Pretty sure its a horrible feeling to kill someone accidentally. My heart goes out to the cyclist, his family & the driver.

Like Caanan, I just flat out avoid using the bike lanes on friars road. There are so many on ramps and off ramps, it feels like playing Frogger, except you don't get three lives.

San Diego should be one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the world--we've go the weather for it--but the city has a long way to go in terms of building infrastructure that doesn't make you feel a bit like Mad Max when commuting to work by bike, or just getting around on the road.

A family friend (my wife had known him for 30+ years) died a couple weeks ago in Ramona when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a semi. It was his fault and not the truck driver's.

It's our duty to be extra vigilant whenever we hit the pavement--it's not always the motorist's fault.

Prayers go out to all.
