If Ron (I think his last name is Bell) is still building wheels at Blacksmith Bike Wheels in San Clemente Canyon? I am popping spokes on my road wheels like Jiffy Pop. They are pretty nice wheels (I think) Easton EA90 SLXs . However, I have had very bad luck with them so far, so I thought I would just hit the reset button and have them relaced. Blacksmith used to be the best place in town (So. Cal. for that matter) to have wheels built, but it has been so long since I have needed that kind of thing done, I'm sorta out of the loop. I'm open to all idears.

Thanks in advance:
Goose

Yeah, he's still there, its called Rose Canyon Bikes or something now.

He can do it right, and it's nice to give a guy like that money.

That said, I feel weird riding on wheels I didn't build, distant.
You can buy good spokes in multiples of ten off Ebay at shop cost.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the EA90 (SLX and TT) spokes were Easton specific and have to be ordered directly.

I won't correct you cause I don't know, but if any one can rebuilt them. I would like him (Ron) to do it. Thats why I put the question out there. I bought the Performance "Special Edition" EA 90's and have nothing but trouble with them. I just want to start over, hopefully he can help me out. Otherwise I'm buying a whole new wheelset, and road wheels are stupidly over priced. But a wheel folding up a 45-50 mph is something I don't want to think about. Thanks for the reply.

Yeeeaaaaah......

Even more reason to stay away from proprietary crap. Though it looks like they are straight pull Sapims, not impossible to get, but yeah.

I don't know about Ron, but I would replace any spoke or spokes with DT spokes. If there is DT Kool-Ade, I drank it a long time ago.

I went through a spoke popping period. Turened out it was because I was taking downhill switchbacks by locking the front wheel and endoing around the turn. But rims arent made to take lateral forces anywhere near they are top straight ones. So if you've been trying to nail a 180 or 360 that could be it too. Just a thought.

Just throwing my two cents in... Easton EA90's are pretty nice wheels, and are built by hand and sonic-ly trued and tensioned. Ron does excellent work and should be able to get the correct spokes for you... it just might take a day or two for him to get them (Easton's just up in the L.A. area). I'd trust him to build up any wheel... he's a perfectionist and will do it better than anyone else.

Easton had a bad batch of wheels. They will replace your wheels. Had some friends return theirs with no problem. The guys at Trek know about it.

yes, Ron Lacey is still building wheels and doing a pretty good bike biz as well under the Rose Canyon Cycles name, although the shop still says Blacksmith Wheels... He built me a bulletproof set of DT Swiss wheels... 240s hubs laced to rr 1.1 rims....

can't hurt to check with Doug at NOTB as well....
