So today i attempted my first commute to work with a new set of 700x32 on my 29er and was enjoying the ride but after dodging all the debris on the 52 coming down the santo rd side something got my tire arrgghh and i was out with nothing with me i had to call the wife to rescue me. my question is what are you guys doing ? should i just carry a spare tube in a seat bag or i think i read somewhere about injecting stans in the tube, but is that ok running 100 plus psi ? all my mountan bikes are tubeless so not sure the best route for the road. Thanks

I carry a spare tube and a few patches in the seat bag.

Looks like you are running mountain tubeless on the road?

I'd carry the tools in a seatbag.

Personally on my commuter I ride Armadillo tires with tuffy tire liners. Heavy as can be but effective, I hate changing tubes on the way to or from work.

That 52 bikelane is great, if they would clean it, otherwise it and the surrounding areas seem to collect glass, metal and various debris. Terrible!

Silly roadies, that's why I ride knobbies on the street as well. Yes it's probably slower, but I get more of a workout over the same distance. More importantly, I don't worry about dodging shit. Excluding some vibration, it's a pretty comfortable ride too.

I do carry an extra tube, CO2, and a tire lever in a small seat pack just in case though.

Anyway, probably not what you wanted to hear, but get yourself some cheap knobbies with a hard compound and you'll never look back.

I thought roadies stuffed their spare tubes down the front of their lycra shorts. I heard it was called "enhancing the package" or something like that...

I carry an 2 tubes, co2 a hand pump and a patch. I commute with a backpack.
Believe it or not, on a couple rides I've used up everything.

Has anyone converted their road tires to tubeless? Stans has the kit to do road wheels, and I am really wanting to try it, but I don't know of anyone that has tried it.
Would stans in a tube work? that might be a great idea for those tiny little punctures you get from tiny pieces of glass in the bike lane. . .

+1 on the Armadillos. I ran those tires for a couple of years, averaging 3,500 miles a year, without flatting once.

on my road and town bikes, i use a seatbag with 2 tubes and a lever if needed, and i carry a pump of some sort (frame, CO2, or road morph.) on my xtracycle, which has really become my favorite bike, i carry a couple 26" tubes and a road morph.

i like all the lower-performance, heavyass, puncture-resistant tires. spec armadillos, conti gatorskin/contact, schwalbe marathon, etc. if any of you are running 26" on the road, i hear a lot of good things about serfas drifters (2.0" and 1.5"), and bike bling has the 1.5s for $22.

i actually think that running knobbie tires on the road attract more crap to puncture tires. ive had 2 flats with knobbies and none with my michelin city tires. i always carry extra tube, co2, tirelevers. once i got a flat next to the 5 by the bayfront wetlands... i got lumped up with mosquito bites all over my neck, legs and arms while changing a tube.

Get a seat post bag, fill it with a tube or 2, 2 CO2 cartridges, a chuck, patches, levers, mini tool and 20$, put a hand pump on your frame or in your jersey or backpack - that should take care of almost every problem. The CO2 and chuck are optional if you have a hand pump and don't mind an upper body workout when you flat.

Thanks for all the input guy's, i went to performance Friday at lunch and picked up a set of tuffy strips and another tube and will start carrying a spare tube,c02 pump, patches, levers and a few bucks in a seat bag.

On a side note the strips were a pita to install but i got them mounted good and will keep my fingers crossed and my eyes on the road better haha.

Why dont you just head up there on a weekend with a broom and get rid of all that crap the whole length of the bike path, then you wont have to worry about carrying anything.

PS take a big broom

So are you volunteering ? haha i thought about that seeing the condition of that path.

On a side note after i got the tuffy strips installed i was heading out for my first ride and heard the sound of air leaking and sure enough the rear was done before i got to try it out, (defective tube broke at stem) so out of frustration i stripped tires/tubes off the rims and returned everything to performance the next day and sold the rims and from now on will stick with knobbies with stans and just replace them when they wear out.
