As has been mentioned, fit is VERY important because it will determine where your center of gravity is located. And if you're in the wrong position, you're going to need to compensate in some other way.

Second, get your weight off your hands. Like they'll tell you in spinning class, your arms, shoulders and hands should have minimal weight on them. They're used to help control the bike but not to support your body. It's hard at first, particuarly on the uphills where you're trying to both push and pull with your legs, but in the long run, you'll strengthen your core and save your wrists, shoulders and neck from pain.

Also, what I've found is that wrist angle is very important. If you're gripping the lowers and your wrists are at a funky angle, they will absorb all of the shocks from the road.

Good luck.

I read the article offroadie posted. at least part of it anyway... well the point is i learned a lot from it. i did some tweaking yesterday. i was messing with the saddle, and the post wasn't micro adjust, so i replace it with a zion post i had lying around and i replaced the saddle with a speshy one off the fsrxc. i figured out the oem saddle was pushing me against the bars. i got the speshy saddle more or less level with the ground so i'm not sliding one way or the other. i rotated the bars a bit so i can comfortably ride in the drops as needed. this actually relieved some pressure as well. the other thing is the saddle was a bit too high, and i was hurting my knees as well. so i got the leg extension to more like 90%.

i went for about a 10 mile with the trailer in tow, and i'm happy to report things are much better. i think i might rotate the bars back just a tad, but overall, i'm pretty comfy now.

thanks guys!

Dood - Don't know about hand positioning on the road bike, but I think I found your new road wheel.

that is a nice wheel. i think my hands are starting to cramp up from holding my middle fingers up all of the time.

i think the road riding is helping my dirt riding out a lot. i think i'm burning more fat on the road too.

this is my personal experience, but when i first started riding road seriously (more time on the saddle) my palm muscle would be in a world of hurt. Wife did too. However, with more miles on the clock the muscles will actually get stronger and you'll be better...just like when you first ride and sit on those saddles just takes time for your body to get used to it
