I never ride in the drops unless I am flying down hill, more stable when going really fast. The only time my hands are on the top on the bars in when I am on a long climb, it seems I get more air in the longs. Most times my hands are grasping the tops of the brakes hoods, that is my normal (and most roadies) comfortable position.

Does that help, where were you hands when you road?

You can try and wrap them with thicker, cushier tape?

90% in the hoods. the rest of the time, i'm looking for another postion. some times i'm just a little behind the hoods where the bars curve. i like getting in the drops on climbs that i can spin.

i've thought about this since the original tape is unwinding a bit. maybe rei will make me a deal since they didn't get it right the first time.

Maybe get a bike fitting. Small things can really add up on the road bike.

Gotta agree with EMFC. If you have pain when riding, "You're not doing it right".

Some minor pain during the adjustment period maybe OK, but if you're suffering it's time to get the bike fit. Really, it's time to get the bike fit even if you're not yet in pain. Fit is more important on the road than the dirt.

Pedal harder (haha).

If you're hands hurt, there might be too much weight on them. Your weight has to balance between your saddle, your pedals, and your handlebars. If you pedal harder, you'll carry more weight on your pedals, and less on your saddle and your handlebars. This allows you to have a more stretched out position.

If you're not pedaling as hard, you'll carry more weight on your saddle and your handlebars. You can change the balance between your handlebars and saddle by adjusting your reach and fore-aft saddle position. If you shorten your reach or raise your handlebars, you'll sit more upright, and carry more weight on the saddle.

Read this article and experiment.
http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/fitting.htm

A lot of shops will allow you to try different stems in the first 2 months of bike purchase. The first thing I would try is to get a higher rise stem to get the handlebars at the same height as the saddle or above the saddle.

Note that this has nothing to do with flat bars versus drops. It's just that most bicycles that have flat bars tend to have more upright positions. As you ride more, your position will likely change as you get accustomed to the position. When I first started, I had a high rise stem with about 90cm in length, now I have about a 7 degree stem at 110 cm, which I should probably flip over to get it lower.

Dood, another position which helps I hope your hand issues is grabbing the lever hoods (No bar; may only be able to do this w/ shimano as opposed to campy which are smaller hoods as it goes vertically) with your thumb on the inside of the hood and over the bar. This removes pressure from your between thumb and 1st finger area and to the outside (pinky) of your hand and makes you more stretched out than grabbing bar and hood. This works best in situtaions where you don't need to brake or shift immediately as you will have to cahnge hand position to do so.
