I want to take my kids biking but at the same time minimize their exposure to motorists. Are there any places like the one of the 56?

There is the rail trail that runs from the coast in Oceanside inland to Vista. Then continues through San Marcos and Escondido after a short interruption. I think there are some down south in Chula Vista/Bonita, but would have to check with the south bay crew. Also look here.

Where are you located?

There's one in Oceanside that runs along the San Luis Rey River from essentially Vista to Oceanside Harbor. It's like 15 miles if you do it as an out and back but I usually pick it up at the College underpass to avoid the short neighborhood section.

Once your kids become more comfortable, you can make some really good loops around Oceanside and Carlsbad starting with this trail.

No motorists, just need to watch out for the occasional hard core roadie.

The 5-mile lap around Miramar Lake is a good one. The kids can feed the ducks afer the ride too.

Miramar is best bet. There are a few days of the week were cars are allowed to go to the Park on the other side.

I agree, not only for the ducks, but the chicks that Walk/Run/Rollerblade/Bike, out there make some awesome eye candy.

same goes for Lake Murray off the 8 fwy. You cant go all the way around the lake due to the water plant, but its an out and back (3/4 of the way around the lake) and its about 6 miles. Theres little dinky roller coaster trails in the dirt on the side of some of the paved road around the lake.
