Now that I think about it, Triguy30 did a 42 mile road event on my Marin Nail Trail with 100mm suspension and slicks. If I recall, he beat out some roadies, on a mountain bike!!!

That's cause I am a badass man. Not the norm. I do like that MTB with the drop bars though. Thinking I might try that.

I still have my 87 Bridgestone mb-1 hanging in the rafters of my garage. The drop bars lasted a little over a year before they were replaced with a flat bar - funny enough a hand me down from John Tomac

The bars changed to bullhorns, the fork to an elastomer Manitou, the stem is the same old Tomac Tioga toss away.

What's the point of drops on a bike you ride off-road? I barely use the drops on my road bike. It's surprising to me that cyclocross has persisted with the development of dirt-specific bikes.

Tomac ran drop bars for a little bit when he was racing both road (7-11, Motorola) and MTB, and he wanted a similar setup on both of his bikes.

Tomac is awesome. He also wore a skinsuit for downhill.

Have you done a cyclocross race? A cyclocross bike is MUCH faster than a mountainbike on a cyclocross race course.

Because of the drop bars? I doubt it . . . . Cyclocross bikes work well on niche courses suited for the inadequacies of that bike design.

You're dodging the main question -- what is the advantage of a drop bar on cyclocross bike? My guess is nothing. All other things being the same, it seems that cyclocross bike with an mtb or flat bar would do just as well or better on a cyclocross course as a cyclocross bike with a drop bar.

And my guess is that a DH bike would do better on a cyclocross course than a cyclocross bike would do on a DH course.

Is there any way to test this theory out? Does any one have a cyclocross course that we can race a cross with a DH or a cross with flat bars? This would be an interesting venture.

Based on the Youtube videos I watched on cyclocross and the races that my buddy up north told me, DH bike would only do well on the down hill parts but not on road nor the uphill. DH bikes are too heavy to put over your shoulders and run up and over steep rocky hills on a cyclocross course. Wouldn't do that well either on pavement whether it is going uphill or downhill on said course. Cyclocross bike on DH course? fuggedaboutit.

Dropbars on cyclocross bikes, advantageous on the flats i would imagine.
