80 miles, is this the San Diego version of the VQ?

You kids have fun though, this short fat guy sitting this one out.

Training and bigger rides is where you'll start loosing weight. Getting a road bike and sitting around isn't going to burn fat.

Luna I'm sure you haven't noticed but I have the same problem  but instead of a road bike I want to run, never done it but with short days coming my weekday rides are soon to be over, I don't like night rides so I hope running will do it.

You caught me red handed, I had a mini mental breakdown today while riding, I blame no time to ride, noone to ride with, too much food being cooked, road bike, bike is too clean, etc.

I"m looking for an excuse, but really need to look in the mirror, & put the blame on myself, instead of excuses. I don't have very good will power regarding food & lack of motivation to exercise.

Looking to blame anything, but myself.

Thanks feeling better, but am considering road bike still.

Road biking? Sounds like we need an intervention.

You need to start building trails. That will lose you some weight. All day Saturday and all day Sunday, plus week nights.

By the way, did I meet you and crew at CdelS around 11, me Hammerschmidt?

Do it.
Post graphs showing your power output on your training ride.
Wear spandex.
Worry about the EXACT height of your saddle.
Yell "hold your line" at people.
Complain about sketchy people.

More seriously, if your goal is to lose weight, you need to exercise regularly (3-4 times a week) and control your diet. It works better if your form of exercise is something you enjoy so you'll actually do it.

Buying a road bike and not riding it will not help you lose weight.

Here's a simple and effective weight loss program:

1. Do not eat anything pass 9pm
2. Do a 1hr of hard cardio before eating breakfast.

Results guaranteed. Much harder than it sounds

are you a cyclist? if so, then you should have a road bike. the only silly people on bikes are the ones who will only ride one kind of bike.

if you want one, get one!

(once i get a discount at work i will be buying one also. i rode one for the first time a few weeks ago and i liked it.)

+1 on that. I have blamed anything and everything for over 5 years now. Im getting close to the point of saying enough is enough. This weekend was the first time I rode 2 days in a row and I feel great about it. I just have to keep the wheels rolling now.

Get yourself a DJ bike and start digging in the back yard and put a pump track in. Look it how little space you need for one of these.

No shame in my game here...I will only ride one kind of bike...a mountain bike...
Silly? some may think so. I do know guys that will only ride road, others like myself that will only ride mt bike, do I think thats silly? No. What I think is silly is someone not understanding other peoples preferences and calling that silly.
There will be friendly antics concerning road vs mountain biking, but it is all in fun. I could honestly care less as long as someone enjoys what their doing...kinda like wearing lycra...we might give our friends a hard time for asking whether or not its alright to wear it but do we really think its wrong? I mean, it is more comfortable...just looks silly when the wrong people wear it...like if I wore it, that wouldn't actually be silly looking, it would be scary looking.
I think being labeled as silly could be construed as a veiled attemp at condescension.

Luna, For me, two things made the difference:

Finding a local route that can lend itself to a 2 to 3 hr depletion ride(once a week if not more), with variations of shorter very painful rides (Local) when the time does not allow the big one.

Combine with 1 hr eliptical machine at gym whenever riding is out.
:10 mins cruise, then 30 mins at 1 minute max resistance&ramp / 1minute recovery resistance, then burn-out intervals for 10 mins, then easy out the last 10. Spin on a stationary for 5 mins after to loosen up. This will burn about 500 calories.

Having the local route was key for me since getting in the car to ride gets old. The eliptical machine i find really simulates the load on the heart similiar to the nasty parts of Cowles, and gives a little more upper body training which seems to suit mtbing.

i've lost near 15lbs in the last month or so. i weighed in at 198.5 yesterday. down from a peak of somewhere near 215.

i attribute my success to lowering my caloric intake and backing off refined sugar stuff (candy bars) and booze.

i also ride my road bike more these days cuz i can get an hour in before work and get some good cardio goin. i listen to some podcasts and jam. the roadie is good for aerobic, and the mtb is good for anaerobic. the roadie has actually made me stronger in the dirt too (in my mind anyway).

i love the dirt. i rode my local yesterday and it was fun, but it knocked out 3 hours of my day that could have been spent with my daughter.
