RadioShack Partners With Seven-Time Tour de France Winner Lance Armstrong to Form New Cycling Team in 2010

FORT WORTH, Texas and AUSTIN, Texas, July 23, 2009 – RadioShack Corporation (NYSE:RSH) is proud to announce a partnership with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to form a new American Pro-Tour cycling team. Beginning in 2010, Lance Armstrong will compete for Team RadioShack as a cyclist, runner and triathlete in events around the world, including the 2010 Tour de France.

Lance Armstrong returned to the world stage of professional cycling in order to promote the efforts of the LIVESTRONG Foundation and their fight against cancer. From the start of the 2009 season at the Tour Down Under in Australia, Lance’s return has generated significant attention and has allowed LIVESTRONG to step up awareness, grassroots action and fundraising in the global fight against cancer.

“This has been a great season so far – the response in the countries we’ve been to has been amazing and it’s clear now that this was the right choice. Utilizing the massive media attention that the sport receives has been the perfect vehicle to help spread the LIVESTRONG message around the world,” said Lance Armstrong. “To be able to compete for an American team comprised of the world’s top cyclists, supported by the best coaches and staff – I couldn’t be happier to partner with RadioShack, a truly iconic American brand,” said Lance Armstrong.

i think it's kind of poor form to talk about a new team when he's in the middle of the TDF racing for Astana. But that's just me.

Maybe he just wants to take attention away from the fact that he is fighting like hell just to stay on the podium? OK, that's still an impressive feat by anyone's reckoning, but this is LANCE we are talking about after all.

Astana is broke, and almost didn't have the money to do the tour so they are out of bike racing, and considering thier economic problems they won't care where Lance goes. Like Bob Roll said last night if Lance and Contador were on diffrent teams the racing would be much diffrent. I don't think anyone could have beat Contidor this year, he was too strong, but he is not smart, and I think he could make a couple a big bonehead moves and cagey old Lance could beat him. Lance is doing the Leadville 100 again this year in August just to keep it real. I would like to see Lance, Floyd, and Dave Weins battle it out. Buncha old farts kicking the kids butts.

Bruyneel says it's time to quit Astana
(AFP) – 2 days ago
BOURG-SAINT-MAURICE, France — Astana team manager Johan Bruyneel announced he is set to quit the Kazakhstan-backed outfit.
"It's time to turn a page in my career," Bruyneel told Flemish language channel VRT just before the 16th stage in Martigny, Switzerland.
With current yellow-jersey holder Alberto Contador and seven-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in his team, Bruyneel is in charge of arguably the strongest outfit on the Tour, but he insisted the team has no future.
Internal trouble has been brewing since Monaco when banned rider Alexandre Vinokourov, who the Astana team was created around, gave a press conference saying either he or Bruyneel must quit the team after the Kazakh's doping suspension ends on July 24.
"We still had to talk about his possible return, but he gave a press conference in Monaco the day before the race started in our team hotel," said Bruyneel.
"Then some whispers from the Kazakhstan Cycling Federation reached my ears and things have started to become very clear for me. Astana is finished!"
Rumours at the Tour de France suggest Bruyneel may launch a new team with Armstrong as his leader.

Radio Shack is the weirdest sponsor I've heard of. I can't believe anyone goes there, and I can't believe RadioShack would want to sponsor a cycling team. Are there RadioShacks in Europe?

Right. Because Astana treated the riders so well this year, other than not paying the riders and putting their Tour de France participation in doubt.

During the Giro, the riders wore kits with major sponsors faded out, because they weren't getting paid. Respect goes both ways.

I would. No more second fiddle for Lance. This will be HIS team and no one else's. Anyhow, there is already disucssion of some big spanish companies putting together a team for Contador. Should make for an even better 2010 TdF.

I would, as well.

My company sponsors a RAAM team. Wish they would sponsor a TdF team! Contador would be the #1 rider.

Agreed. You've just gotta love a guy who launches attacks against his own teammates in the mountains--not once, but twice. What a guy!!
