That's BS. How could any crime, where the actions of one person cause the death of another, be called a misdemeanor? The driver probably will not be charged though. Our legal system doesn't care about cyclists.

I don't know the California statute, but I don't think "misdemeanor manslaughter" is itself a misdemeanor level offense. What it means is that you killed someone while you were committing a misdemeanor. Speeding, for example. So you may not have intended to kill, but because you killed someone while committing a misdemeanor, you are automatically criminally liable for the death

Maybe a real California lawyer can chime in.
