Thinking of getting a cross bike. Does anyone have one I can try out and see if I really want one?

You want one. If I was going to have just one bike, it would be a cross bike geared as a road triple.

I have a SS CX bike (IRO Rob Roy) you can try. I keep it at work as my errand bike. I've ridden it in LPQ and it was awesome.

Best of both, I want to do a race next May and I'll need a bike for it.

Never known anyone who has regretted getting one. Beyond CX racing, they open up a lot of fun riding possibilities:

--You can re-ride tame MTB trails on your CX bike, making them fun again.
--You can do killer mixed surface rides, combing lots of dirt roads and pavement, without suffering too much on either dirt or pavement.
--And you can use it as your "rain" bike when it's too wet to take out your really nice road bike. At least that's what I did when I used to live in a place where it rained a lot.

They are the Swiss army knife of bicycles, and nothing will survive after the holocaust except for cockroaches and cyclocross riders.

The Gunnar pictured below was my first one, and is now set up as a townie bike for my wife. The Ti bike is my current all-around road/dirt touring machine.

That Gunnar is sweet. Trying to find something off season to save me a few bucks.

I was there in the B Category. Yellow bike with the funny stem. Matching yellow gloves.

We didn't make it but I promised my daughter we would go next week, so we will be there for sure.
