This piece was in the February issue of Bicycling, which you might get free like me. Which is the right price for a mountain biker I think, but there are occasional gems like this. And eventually it’s available online.

Thanks Dan.

It would be interesting to know if he successfully improved his marriage, his relationship with his kids, and his depression.

I just heard a stat (not sure if true), that 50% of people suffer from sort of mental illness at some point during their lives. That seems like a pretty big number, but the longer I'm around, the more I can believe it. Some issues require correct diagnosis and treatment from a professional, while others can be improved by a 'check-up from the neck up'.

How can we be happier?

We do know that some key elements of happiness include strong social face-to-face relationships with friends and family. Altruism is another important factor. 'Flow' is another very important factor, particularly exercise that encompasses flow, which we all know something about. Flow is the antithesis of 'Strava'. No rules, no time limits, no 'winning'; just being immersed in the moment. You can incorporate flow into work, chores, hobbies, etc., but with regard to flow, it's when we combine it with exercise that it gives us the biggest happiness benefit. How lucky are we that most of us here can combine flow exercise with the social relationship component?

As for the fella in the article, he's also at an age that is statistically, the unhappiest in a person's life. The good news is that it's all uphill from there: :D

^^^ Thanks for the perceptive response. Interesting graph. My own would not match very closely as it would start low on the left, and yes, 34 to 37 were some peak years, but no steep decline to 50-53. Just keeps going gradually up.

Ah, but you are not a statistic...YMMV.
