A woman frantically called 911 at about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday in the area of 33rd Street and Adams Avenue after she claimed a group of bicyclists were chasing her. She said one of them had punched her car window and broke it.

All parties remained at the scene when San Diego police arrived.

The group of nine or 10 cyclists told police they were in the bike lane when a car came up behind them and the driver began honking nonstop. The bicyclists said the female driver then hit one of them with her car.

The cyclist jumped off his bike and his bike then got dragged by the car for several blocks.

"We heard a car honking, just holding onto that horn,” one of the bicyclists told 10News. “And we gave her the room. She didn't want to take it. She got closer and closer, clipped one of my friends and dragged his bike four or five blocks."

At that point, one of the bicyclists caught up to the car and started banging on the window so hard it broke. He cut his arm and had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.

After speaking to both parties, officers chose not to ticket the driver. The bicyclists were not cited either, but might face misdemeanor vandalism charges for kicking and punching the car.

-Notice that the motorist, after striking and dragging a bike for blocks, was not cited. Only in 'Merica's Finest City.

Another fine example of reporting on the "real news story".

The bikers might have been riding three abreast or something like that to tick her off in the first place but that's no reason to drive like that.

The point to take away from this incident is, of course, the value of always riding with good, full-finger gloves, preferably with armored knuckles.

Assault with a deadly weapon, damaging property. Maybe the bike was a POS, and the cyclists assholes but c'mon running a cyclist down in a car and not stopping and no ticket at least. She must have been hot.

I watched the video...definitely not hot. Not even warm.
Just another example of the SDPD's unofficial policy towards bikes on the road.

Not too different, if you think about it, from the attitude of other authority types towards bikes on the trails, eh?

This seems to be a case where both parties have erred. The driver, obviously, should have been ticketed. Even if the cyclists did not yield, by law they have the same rights and responsibilities to the road as any other vehicle. (Although common sense and courtesy should tell you that getting out of a way of something that could easily kill you is a good idea, and it appears the cyclists did that).

However, the cyclists clearly were wrong when one of them decided to bang on the car window and break it. There's no justification for self defense in that case since they were no longer in imminent danger. Once you go that route, the police are probably not likely to be sympathetic to your case, and the driver will probably act the same (or worse) to cyclists in the future.

Seems to me both the driver and cyclist should be cited.
