SD bike coalition board member killed cycling

By Lyndsay Winkley12:15 p.m.Sept. 22, 2014Updated3:19 p.m. ⎙ Print

An avid bicyclist and at-large board member of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition died Monday of injuries he suffered Friday when he was struck from behind by a pickup while biking in Oregon, police there said.

Kerry Kunsman, 67, had been a Coalition member since 1997 and had previously served as the group's Treasurer, according to a biography on the organization's website.

"A friend and teacher to so many and a dedicated family man," said a statement posted to the bicycle coalition's Facebook page. "The Bike Coalition wishes to express our deepest sympathies to his family. We are so grateful for the many years of service he gave to the bicycling community and the SDCBC."

Oregon State Police said Kunsman was helmeted and riding west on Highway 131, between Tillamook, Ore., and Netarts, Ore., when he was struck by a 2011 Ford F-350. The 74-year-old driver stopped after the 5:15 p.m. crash.

Kunsman was taken to a hospital and then flown to a medical center in Portland in critical condition. He died of his injures about 1 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Another Facebook post on the bike group's page said Kunsman was undertaking a border-to-border bicycle trip when the crash happened. Kunsman had been writing about the experience in his blog titled West Coast Tour 2014. His last entry was posted the day he was injured.

Kunsman was a certified cycling instructor through the League of American Bicyclists, and was awarded Instructor of the Year by the county Coalition in 2006.

Yes, it is very sad. I saw in the paper that another local bicyclist was killed in SD recently commuting to work. Seeing these news items way too frequently lately...
