hey guys,
requesting help to find a road bike for a friend of mine. I tried to convince him to get a mtn bike. no go.

6ft tall - average torso.
newbie - never ridden road or mtn bike

says he's looking for 3x a week riding at work and home. -- lives in Rolling Hills Chula Vista

$1000 to spend

has a Porsche and likes his toys.

what bike. new or used should he look for?
make / model
components
frame size

* i'm thinking along the lines of a 56cm Roubaix with 105 components.

suggestions?

thanks in advance.

Send your buddy to test ride some bikes at the Chula Vista Bicycle Warehouse. Have him ask for Christian or Carlos. From there they can show him some decent entry level endurance category road bikes. With the height you have provided, he should fit well on 58's or size large.

-Raleigh Revenio 2.0 and 3.0
(these are generally backed with a rebate from Raleigh)
-Giant Defy 3
-Giant Defy 1...it's just outside his budget but it comes well equipped and IMHO about the best bargain for entry/performance category.

If he really wants a better comfort level with road aspects, have him look at the Giant Escape 1 and 0 models. These are performance hybrids that offer mtb geo with 700 clincher wheels that roll with less resistance.

Good on you to help him out and best of luck with the hunt.

Check out Planet X bikes in the UK, they have a US store too but not sure if they sell many completes. Really great bikes and parts spec for the price. They are always having sales and selling demo / display bikes. My brother got a full carbon bike, all SRAM Force, under $2k. You should be able to find a 105 or Rival level bike near your price limit. Also check Jenson and Pricepoint for closeouts. If you don't need carbon you should be able to find a new bike in that range.

I'm 6ft as well and ride a 56cm Surly long haul trucker. It's a little higher than his budget at $1400 but a steel bike is so much fun to ride. shifting is real clean the components are very nice. I'm 1000 miles on mine and have just recently needed to do an adjustment at the cable for my derailer. The stock wheels are a little heavy but it's a real fun bike to ride. It rides like a cadillac. If he would rather carbon look at bikes direct. I have found many full carbon bikes with 105 components and upgraded rims for 1K. He has to check often though because 56 and 58 cm bikes go quick.
