I'm looking for some suggestions on what would be some road bikes that don't suck up to $1000. I've been to Ocean Bikes in CV but I'm curious if i can find a better deal and something a bit newer. I don't care about weight because it will be a commuter and grocery getter.

Thanks :drunk:

I just recently got a diamondback podium 2 for 720 I think from amazon.

jenson has a cheaper '11 model, but after tax and all it's only like 60-70 cheaper than the '12 model

I've put a couple hundred miles on it now and am not disappointed with it at all - but I'm not an experienced road guy so take what I say with about 10000 grains of salt.

You can get a really nice bike for that price. Get sized at the LBS so you know ( knowledge) what size frame works, get familiar with components eg: XT = Ultegra or Stx = 105, then hit C'list. Trek stores are having a Tent sale this weekend. Good luck and don't show up dumb unless you found that money on the road side.

+1 on what Belizean said. For that price you could get a real nice used road bike in CL. A Trek, Specialized, Fuji, Bianchi perhaps. Lots of people here buy nice bikes then they never use after the first few rides them then sell them for about half of what they paid. Road bike frames are pretty bombproof due to no moving parts, so they are an easier used buy than a mountain bike which usually gets thrashed pretty good. If you want a new bike, check the sales. I don't generally like Performance Bike but they do have Fuji road bikes which are nice which they sell for pretty cheap. Happy hunting!

If your only getting it for a grocery getter. I think the 29er with slicks is a good idea, you can pull double duty with it. E-bay is a great place to find "lightly used" road gear but, I have found the screaming E-Bay deals are found in the winter when places like the North East/Mid West, are unrideable. Also If you are going to ride the Dark Side, proper frame fit is super important. The Competive Cyclist website has a fit calculator, that is really good, and best of all it's free.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting

I have a GT peace 9r ss that was not getting much love since I moved to a much more hilly area. I wanted a grocery getter/ commuter. So I ordered a three speed disc hub, a new rim, spokes, a shorter stem road brake levers (made for disc) and a salsa woodchipper bar. I have the drops on but not the new wheel yet. I like it so far, I am just waiting on the rim, I will let you know more later. Oh and total investment was right around $300.
