And Lance did fail a test. He failed a test in the 2006 Tour de Suisse for EPO. It was the same day that the UCI received a "donation" from Armstrong in the amount of 100K. Armstrong has "donated" about 500K to the UCI. The UCI recently made a statement that those donations by athletes will never be taken again for these reasons.

It was 2001 that proven liar Landis claimed said failure/donation happened.

"Due to the controversy following the statements made by Floyd Landis, the International Cycling Union wishes to stress that none of the tests revealed the presence of EPO in the samples taken from riders at the 2001 Tour of Switzerland," the UCI said in a statement. "The UCI has all the documentation to prove this fact."

...or better yet, if you come in 2nd place, call an investigation on the guy who kicked your butt. because you know he just had to have been doping.

lesson learned. strive to do well, but never strive for 1st place. it will ruin your life.

^^^ Has anyone noticed the increased focus on Livestong efforts every time the doping issues heat up? I am not criticizing LA's anti-cancer efforts, believe me. I applaud what he's done and continues to do in that arena. It is just an observation.

And does LA look really old all of a sudden, or what? I know we're all getting older, but he looks beaten down.

good point. i guess as they say, even bad press is free press and brings with it some interest.

but as for the title of the thread, he apparently hasn't given up fighting, just that his cause is a larger one than the tour de france.

I wanted so bad to believe in Lance. Oh well I forgive him. I hope he goes on to make tons more money for cancer research. Perhaps he has a future as Gov.of Texas.

Regardless of the "truth," the biggest harm is to cycling's fans.

Me and my wife watched and cheered for Lance and Landis throughout their heydays. Hell, we even had our kid run along Highland Valley Road with a "We love you Floyd" banner when he came through with the Tour of Cali a few years ago, before the shitstorm. Now we feel like, well, fools, to be honest. Fortunately, I have not had to do this, but I have wondered what I would say if my daughter asked why we don't like Floyd Landis anymore. I find it difficult to say to her he cheated with drugs to win, lied about it, then admitted it to take down his former boss.

So while the world can turn a new leaf and applaud LA for his continuing fight against cancer, I will too, but I will also be thinking, you won't fool me twice.

And yes, he does look beat down. He should since he has not lifted the weight of guilt off his shoulders with his latest PR move. That yoke will apparently hang on him forever.

The one big lesson to be taken from this is if you play with fire, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. LA is such a short little prick that Hincapie, his "best friend," gave him up, which, as Cannan pointed out, was the probable reason for him not fighting the latest charges. LA knew his legacy, including Livestrong, would be forever tarnished if all his "friends" testified against him as expected. So he took the easy way out, can't say I blame him, an exceptionally smart move actually.

I still think his un-retiring while his former helpers Landis and Hamilton were stripped of their brief glory was a bad move. They were pissed that he seemed to be getting away with it, again, while they were in the ditch, eating shit. If he stayed retired at that point in time when they were being kicked in the nuts, something tells me omerta would have stuck and we would not be having this discourse.

As a side bar comment, this years Tour de France was the most boring one, ever. I have to admit I kind of miss the crazy, allegedly drug-fueled battles between LA and Ullrich, Pantani, Landis, etc.

I was duped too. I still have my Floyd Landis signature on a Livestrong poster I obtained when the Tour of Cal came through Escondido.

Maybe the irony of where the signature is will make it worth something someday...

They all dope.

But Lance won the TDF 7 times and that's a fact.
Eddy Merckx won the TDF 5? times and also had some "rumours" on doping. There is and will allways be dope users in the peleton ,period.

he came up clean for all the tests.

was he doping? probably. were the guys they'll now give the titles to doping? probably.

but the difference is those guys will not be subject to the kind of investigation that armstrong was.

so bottom line, did it clean the sport of doping?

That said, he's still a hero in my book for all he's done raising public awareness and money to fight cancer. It's not that hard to separate Lance the "bad-ass bike racer" (as Floyd Landis called him) from Lance the philanthropist. Very, very few people are all good or all bad.

I hate to say "I told you so" . . . okay, no I don't.
