It's good to have high gears but it's hard to not overuse them. I went from a 23 high gear to a 28 and notice I can tackle the steeps with less pain but am slower overall. It's give and take...

Yar, but that was for one stage in particular that was like Pine Creek Rd. times three.

JJ sat down on that whole climb, and with a fairly healthy cadence. The low gear probably helped him to recover after his break as well.

I have standard and for a while wanted compact because I can't spin up steep stuff. I generally don't mind slugging it out, but I have to ignore the voices telling me that I'm tiring myself out.

I have gone up the road to the top of Woodson, that was ridiculous. I am OK with not being able to spin up that kind of thing.

Before I got newer cranks, 53/39, I had a standard and changed the rings to 52/38. I could tell the difference, I think I will do it again when my current rings wear out.
