My new thing lately has been riding the beater bike to and from work (only 3 miles each way) on the sidewalks only. I have been a little freaked by the shitty drivers on the road lately and figured this would be a good interim solution so I could still bike commute.

I have to say I love it. No stress, I don't wear a helmet since I am not on the road and am going much slower, and can even ride with flip flops on. Because it's a bike that no one wants to steal I just leave it wherever. Being Socal, there are very few people using the sidewalks so there is little user conflict and when I do run into a walker or jogger I stop and say hi. I imagine this is what it is like in a place like Belgium where everybody seems to ride bikes. Anybody else do this or am I just a freak?

You are actually riding on the the highest form of city trail. It is too bad that they cannot afford to put cement sidewalks in our City Open Spaces to replace those dirty DG stroller paths, or even worse those god awful narrow twisty singletracks.

Dont be too lax about theft....scum steal everything, even POS beater bikes.

I use to ride my bike to work in Vista...5 miles each way and I would ride mostly sidewalks when I could...felt alot safer......

Where I grew up we didn't have many sidewalks so it is pleasure.

What does a 3 mile commute feel like? I thought that was only true in fairy tales?

i ride 50/50 urban/dirt alot and anywhere but the road is preferable. Take an old wheel set and put old used dirt tires on it, then you can bust through any parking lot or whatever at a moments notice. Mike wear your helmet dumbass :drunk:

True about alot of people riding bikes , but we all hate each other and have very little respect for each other. This goes for the most of the roadcyclist with their carbon roadbikes thinking they are Cavendish/Boonen/Armstrong/etc.... Pedestrians don't like mountainbikers in the forest and vice versa ..... Al because the lack of respect for one and others hobby , sad sad sad. The biggest group with some respect for others are the mountainbikers , the real ones , not the ones that ride roadbikes during summer. Some city's are dangerous to bike through ....

But hey , WEAR YOUR HELMET !!!!!!
