Road riding to lunch today, going about 25 MPH on El Camino when a car cuts me off turning right. Missed me by an inch, no kidding. Chased down the driver to her parking spot and gave it to her!

I think she got the message after my rather loud and impassioned rant to her in her office parking lot in front of her co-workers.

Some drivers seem to think once they pass a cyclist, we are stationary objects, not vehicles moving as fast as them.

What can we do to keep this move from happening, aside from after the fact, one-on-one PSAs like I had to do today? This is not the first time this has happened to me and I cannot see how anything we as cyclists can do to prevent it, aside from abandoning the road to the shitty, stupid drivers here which I am not willing to do.

I have a HUGE adrenaline rush from it though I have to admit.

Proud of ya Kimba!! I've been in that situation myself more than once. Personally, I think you did the right thing. Hopefully she'll keep an eye open next time as well as tell all her friends. The roads dangerous that's why I think we all prefer the dirt!

Sorry mike but I can't picture you yelling at someone without your usual big smile, I doubt she got your message other than how nice and friendly you are

Ha Baja and K2Brandon, thanks. When someone makes me see my life flash, I do turn into quite a huge asshole, and I sprinted that beyotch down faster than Fabien Cancellara. She tried to escape from me but it was not going to happen. Then she did not want to get out of her car. Then she wanted to back out of her parking spot when she realized I was not going to leave, that was not going to happen. The F bomb was dropped loudly several times when she sheepishly came out of her car for the lecture in front of her office. I am still kind of buzzing from almost getting squashed by the beyotch. I do think she will forever remember this incident fortuntely for the next cyclist.

Use to happen to me all the time. Road shoes have nice hard soles, they seem to make a nice imprint on a quater panel. That or a U-Lock takes off a side mirrors easily....just saying.

proper etiquette question: I was first car at light on Poway Rd crossing Pomerado. Cyclist stopped next to me, we'd been leapfrogging down Poway so I know he's doing a fairly good pace. I need to turn right at the chase bank entrance maybe 50yds down. I'll get there ahead of the cyclist, but very likely will still be in the turn as he catches up to me - like any other car turning on the road the vehicles behind are expected to have to slow for the turning vehicles in front right? As long as you don't cut them of and they have plenty of time to react there is nothing inherently wrong with the biker having to slow down?

My solution was to signal way early to let him know I was turning and speed up more than usual to get there well ahead of him.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=poway+and ... s&t=h&z=19

Heading west, turn is the right at the 1st little group of trees.

Kimba,

First of all I am glad that you are safe and sound, but I have a question here for you that may upset you or others, but hope this isn't the case and you take it as a question rather than anything else.

Would you have behaved the same way if you found the driver to be a beefy, bruly MMA look alike?

I think she deserved the lecture, but at the same time, being too harsh on a lady maybe wasn't all that neccessary specially in front of her office.

Although all drivers should understand that we have the same right to use the road as they have, but some don't get it and there are cases that they miss us due to our smaller sizes.

I wish Call trans / city would do more to inform drivers as we have all the same rights and this way, there will be less incidents out there where we have our fun riding.

No offense taken. If it was a huge MMA guy I would have done the EXACT same thing. Women and men are equal especially when it comes to dumbshit dangerous and illegal things that they should not be doing. Even though I was in spandex today I learned a long time ago how to defend myself and even inflict some damage so I am not intimidated by unarmed persons no matter how big they are.

Plus, I had a helmet on, so I would be protected from a piledriver or whatever they call that move!

same type off thing happend to me just right now on my way home from work. I wanted to strangle that guy. I said "WTF" and I hoped he heard me, im sure he did. tucson has a unique way of spreading awareness by putting whats called "ghost bikes" up. where ever there was a fatality. kinda erie but I think it gets the point across. Im gonna ghost ride my bike right into the side of the next car that does that to me. :domo:

Yes, really. So worst case I get beat up and sue the mofo. Fine with me.

You have to stand up for what's right.

When cars do this it is called the "Right Hook". Its safe to say that you are likely in the cars blind spot, so if you are hauling in the bike lane passing slow or stopped cars be careful when approaching entrances to parking lots or cross streets for cars looking to turn in. If a car passes you then turns, likely they misjudged exactly how fast someone on a bike can close up the gap. Cars are watching out for other cars and looking the Starbucks etc. but cyclists not so much. Make sure when you are in traffic like this have your hands on the brake levers, and be ready to go around behind them or turn in right with them.
