I would also tell riders to drink more than just water during super hot days. If your sweat tends to be on the salty side( white crust on your helmet straps), you will need to replace those lost electrolytes. I take 2 endurolyte pills every hour when in the heat. It works. Nothing wost than bonking 40 miles from home!

If you want to get detailed, find your sweat rate, then drink enough to replace your sweat.

being on the big side, i sweat alot. even worse these past 2 days in poway heat. if we're riding at lunch time. as soon as i get to work, i start to hydrate and make sure i piss clear. if we're doing a ride home (poway to santee) i'll drink a sports drink 2 hours before my ride. i figure i'm going to loose electrolytes on the 2 hour ride home and if i drink any electrolytes during the ride, it's too late for my body to process.
i also carry a lot of water in my pack. i rather have the weight penalty, hell i'm already big and slow, then going bonkers inside the canyons.

It happens rather quickly. You start feeling really hot with shortness of breath, flaccid pulse. Best is to see early warning signs of exhaustion and excessive sweating and heat (redness to face). Seek cool shaded place immediately and get comfortable. To prevent, pre-load with mineral water, cold min 1 L (urine colorless). Then head out with electrolyte in the camelback and twice what you normally bring to drink. I also add electrolyte tabs every hour and shotblocks. I h=came close twice, but recovered. Really bad if heat exhaustion and bonking go hnd in hand.
