1.9 miles ~800' vert nice and its close to my work!

If I am to drive far (aka outside of Sd proper) I'd say Nate Harrison Grade is worth the drive.

Only prob w/ Nate is the 2hr climb part. Would be good to see how much farther you can get up it every 10 mins though.

I like repeats at Torrey Pines (inside road). You can stay in the dirt 99% of the way, which is a bit soft and provides great resistance, and there are ways to ride there from different points for a good warm-up before you hit it. Like Daryl said, Otay IS the best for what your looking for though.

+1 on Otay Mountain: 6 miles and 3K of climbing from Thousand Trail RV park to the antennas with no real brake after the first 200 yards, all gravel fireroad.

Double Peak in San Marcos. This moderately difficult trail climbs 2.5 miles from Discovery Lake to Double Peak, the second highest peak (1644') in the Cerro de las Posas Mountains of San Marcos.

Or Elfin Forest - The Way Up

Black Mountain in Ramona (much more of a mountain) start in Pamo Valley. Great sustained climb. 7mi to the top 3000 vert do as much or as little as you want.

I know in San Diego most downhill rides have to be earned, so most of you guys are strong riders. I live in the Temecula area. Twice a month I ascend Nate Harriso grade road up Palomar mountain on a freeride bike, or Bundy Hill off of Bundy Canyon in Wildomar.

Ok for those medium length hill repeats...

7-10min dirt climbs!

I mainly do these on my road bike but I'd like to do them on my mtb to more comforable on the bike as it is a slightly different position.

Jackson (mission trails from the visitor center) from the creek to the top by the construction/vents is good but I don't like the long false flat in the middle
vowels is great but too technical for smooth repeats. Is there anything on black mnt?

looking for nontechnical 8%-16% dirt that is a constant grade and local to SD....

Protijy,

The dirt sewer easement from Sorrento Valley to Eastgate Mall Rd (UTC by the Episcopal Church) is exactly what your looking for, and it is very close by to you. I now know why you want a grade like you describe to train on!!!!! I have been hammering up that and the improvements in my riding fitness are shocking me.

I used to think riding Elfin Way Up Trail plus Equine Loop to the kiosk area non-stop in 30-35 minutes was good training.

It might be the one between the 805 and Eastgate Dr. I work at the end of Eastgate Mall by Miramar rd, that will be something I want to start hitting up! Nevermind I see where he said the church so it should be that one you pointed out

That's the one. And if you want to bust a gut, try the steep western offshoot that steeply ascends to one of the Qualcomm buildings. It's just before the grade starts on the main service road. It'll definitely get your heart pumping if you do it without a break.

Yes, that is the one.

CX bike would be fine, no problem. I use it for my commute to Poway thru PQ and finding pushing the pace on the low to medium grades on this road makes for a great workout.
