Ride with others! I love to ride by myself, but I end up watching wildlife and taking pictures. Then one day I hit the E-ticket ride on the north end of Mission Trails....off the east end of Clairmont Mesa. It was up and up, and they were both experienced so I got to ask a ton of technique questions. Now, on my routine dirt ride, I can do the uphills much better. Now, I don't have particular riding goals and I'm non-competitive, but I do like a challenge. I want to burn calories, and want to get stronger, and I want to tone up. I also want to keep up with others.
