About a year and a half ago, MiLo (mloteyro) and I started putting bikes together in our garages (MiLo was doing this a bit longer than I). After upgrading a few bikes and kind of learning the mechanics of it all, I decided I wanted to put a bike together from scratch. So I bought the frame (craigslist) and the rest of the components (EBay baby). Then I realized you needed special tools for some things. That can get pretty expensive (as you all would know). So I decided to see how I could make some of my own tools cheaper. I started with the Cup Press. I think the cheapest I found this for was around $50 on EBay. So I went to Home Depot, and there it was... Here is my version of the cup press. It ain't pretty, but it sure as hell works and it's cheap (I think a total of $15). Simple set up. 2 oversized washers, 2 nuts (size depends on rod - no smartalik comments now - okay go ahead) and a threaded rod. Attachment: Put them together as such Attachment: Just take a lock wrench and press them together making sure you press them evenly. Attachment: Perhaps a simple idea, but definately made a world of difference for my bikes. Thanks for listening. |

I have pretty much the same "exotic" tool myself! Except I use round washers that fit inside of the cups. |

Good stuff. I knew it was a simple tool, and that a lot of people probably already had one of these. I would love to see the other homemade tools. Can't wait. |

Be carefull with those things Mac Gyvers, my buddy split a head tube like a tin can not paying attention and the head set wasn't plum, he just threw that frame away. I've seen a lot of head sets put in with the washers and bolt setup, but after seeing that I saved my money and bought a park headset press, If any one ever needs one, just ask. |

yeah you have to be really careful. my homemade press will get all cockeyed and it could warp the tube if i'm not watching. especially on steel frames... |

Yeah, gotta be cautious! I start mine with gentle tapping with a mallet and wood block, eyeballing it very carefully before putting the screws to it. [By the way, it's about time for a McGyver post!... altho maybe it oughta be a Garage post. I like to see which will go longer w/o a post, McGyver or F88.] |
