By popular demand...................
We headed north for a 2 part trip.
First part was a week at the daughters
place in Big Pine, in the Owens valley.

Almost got thrown in the pokey in Randsburg
on the drive out.
Image

I rode Lower Rock Creek one day. Super
fun trail, awesome views along the "creek"1
I did the first 2 thirds since I was climbing it.
Ran into a few coyotes on the way up.
Image

Image

Image

Played some cards later...............
Image

The second ride was a little local trail network in Bishop.
Not a lot of riding, but great fun and an awesome downhill,
desert style, fast and flowy, with a few rocks thrown in.
Image

Image

My last ride was in the hills behind Big Pine. Fireroads and cow pastures.
The final drop in pretty technical and fun.
Image

Image

My son in law Nick and I took Brayden, the oldest grandson
to the local Fair. He had a blast!
Image

The last day we drove up to Mammoth for a swim and
lunch at Mammoth Brewery.
Image

We then headed north.

The second part of our trip was north, about
an hour above Tahoe in Graeagle.
I've never been that far north in the Sierrras,
it was a far more forested and a ton more
water. Tons of lakes and rivers, awesome!
We met up with Shannon and his wife Gloria
for the weekend.
We saw deer right off the back deck.
Image

The first ride we did was Mills Peak. The girls shuttled us
to the top.
Not really the top, we climbed about a thousand more feet
to reach the lookout. I wasn't feeling great at the beginning,
but once we started down I felt better. The trail was about 13
milles. It was Shannon's trail, CHUNK!
It was a great ride, I was cooked at the bottom. Great day.
Image

I felt kinda like this..................
Image

We took the next day off . Headed over to a local
brewery in Blairsden. Super cool place, all outside
on 15 acres. Dog friendly, corn hole, ping pong,
frisbee golf and BBq's for your use. Great time.
Image

Our next ride was a shuttle to Mt. Hough. We met the shuttle
and jumped in the van for a 50 minute drive up a beat up dirt rode.
The driver pointed out Crystal Lake below us, he said it's a thousand
feet deep! Amazing view!
The trail was super fast and flowy, lots of berms and small jumps
and drops. The trail was 11.5 miles with very little climbing.
I think we beat the shuttle to the bottom. Trail ended at a river
with a swimming hole, water was cold but refreshing!
I'm not sure if I mentioned that I kept up with Shannon the
whole way.
Great trail!
Image

Image

Some wildlife on the way out.
Image

The next day we went fishing at Gold Lake. Fishing,
not catching. Beautiful lake.
Image

Image

A boy and his dog........................
Image

The last ride we did was the Downieville Classic. We used Yuba Expeditions
again for the shuttle out of Downieville. $25 for the shuttle, great info, and
a beer at the bottom. These guys do a great job!
In all of my 35 years of mountain biking, this is the best ride and
trail I've ever done! It was a combo of Hough and Mills times a million.
It was sooooo much fun and amazing views. Riding with Shannon really
helped me step up my game. I rode stuff I probably wouldn't have and
went pretty damn fast in some sections. Amazing day.................

Image

We had a great trip. Thanks Shannon and Gloria!
Great food, beers, music, times and people.

Stopped at June Lake Brewery on the way home for a "road soda".

Thanks for posting! There is a lifetime worth of stuff to explore up there. They just opened some PCT to bikes at packer saddle too. PCT now goes through the lakes basin instead. Was up in the area for Labor day. I'll post a TR when I get some time.

I'll look for some pics to post, but yeah, that summed up the highlights. Very nice time. It got a little cooler than my normal June/July experience after Harley and Lisa left, toward the end of the trip, so I think I'll stick to the late Spring, early Summer schedule in the future. Plus the fishing was lousy.

I've never been to Mammoth, and Harley had never been here. I was really hoping that Harley would give me the thumbs up on this area over Mammoth, to make me feel better about the extra 5 hours there and back I've been making on each trip. Thankfully he did.

FYI, be sure to double-check your suspension PSI when moving up in elevation. I really did not enjoy Hough as much as I expected. Part of it was the exposure on trails that aren't 'cupped' like D-ville is. The other, as I found out later, was that I had a lot of extra PSI in my fork that had bled into the other stanchion. After letting all air out, the fork was still 2 inches 'at attention'. Harley had the know-how to push a zip tie into the right stanchion to release all that extra air. Yay! New buttery fork again! Oh yeah, and the last reason was because I couldn't shake that fucking guy behind me!

Funny aside that got a big ol' guffaw out of me. Post ride, we dipped into the cold as hell swimming hole at the bottom of the ride. I stripped down to my chamois and braved the chill (barely). Afterward, I stripped off the chamois and put my riding shorts back on, and threw the chamois on the bike rack. Another beer and it was time to go. Harley starts loading his bike, sees some 'kit' on the rack, grabs it, and damn near pukes as he chucks my cold wet chamois away from him as fast as humanely possible. Yuck! I didn't even want to touch that thing.

On to D-Ville. It also happens to be my favorite trail. It was gratifying to hear a 35 year veteran echo that sentiment.

Oh, and in reference to DirtRider, yep, it was all vegetarian meals, with the exception of some recently caught yellowtail that we schlepped up there. Harley and Lisa brought the most schizznetiest dry rub (with curry and herbs) that we sprinkled all over the fish pre-BBQ. Yummy!

Too many beers, lot's of laughs, good conversations, and just plain ol' good times.

Awesome TR, thanks to both Big Clyde and Avidtest for posting it up.

I really liked all the pics of Avidtest's dog! Is that a golden retriever?
