Yup. Back on the saddle! :hello:

I hyper-extended my knee 6 weeks and a day ago - when the knee is unnaturally forced beyond it's normal range of motion, i.e, I bent my knee the WRONG way - snap pop.... Yeeouch! Yes, it was a sickening feeling.

Today was my first trail ride. One tentative loop at LC, up Switchbacks and down Horned Lizard (Was scared to risk Nascar; Booooo!! ).

But overall, good news! I did not lose too much strength - was still able to clean Switchbacks with no stops, dabs or drinks, although I was breathing harder, so a long endurance ride is going to have to be worked up to.

Coming down was not quite as good (but still so great to be riding again). Limited ability to bend the damned thing reduced the ability to use that leg as a shock absorber. And while vastly improved, it was still janky, unstable and had a few unnatural clicks and pops when I pedaled with the seat lowered. Gross...

All in all though, I'll call it a success! I'm home now (an hour later), and on a couple of Advils, but so far so good. No pain and not much swelling. Just need my range of motion back dangit. I know; patience grasshopper. Is it too early to celebrate?

Glad to know your injury wasnt more serious.

Curious about that seatpost....looks kinda tall, is that the new 925mm version Ive heard about?

Close; 1420mm... I have to admit, it does look oddly long at that angle.

Congratulations. That was a pretty serious test ride you picked.
You MUST be feeling better.

I think this just shows how excited you were to ride again. Make sure you call a doctor if it lasts for longer than 4 hours.

Great to hear you're back pedalling. Did you get the knee checked out? That sounds a bit like what happened to me a few months ago. Hyper-extended with accompanying pop. Turned out to be torn ACL. I had torn it before in the same knee and this time it didn't feel unstable, so the diagnosis was a surprise. Hopefully it's fine but keep an eye on it if you didn't get it checked out.

Ha! Yes, well it did give me a few ideas on augmenting my posture in the bedroom. Perception is reality!

I'm still concerned that may be the case. I had two sets of x-rays on two different days, but I know that is unlikely to show a tear. However, the ortho did some mobility and stability tests and felt confident that nothing was completely torn. I'm giving it one more week to stabilize more and if it's still janky and clicky, I'll get the MRI. For reference, there were two pops within a split second of each other which made me think a tendon or ligament snapped outside of it's 'guide' and back in immediately, rather than a single pop tear.

I don't recall if you posted up details; did you end up needing surgery? My understanding is that the recovery time for that could be 6-months to a year.

Yeah x-rays won't show a tear. But they can show if bones and/or knee cap are out of alignment, which can help with diagnosis. Both times I've torn ACL the ortho was able to tell just by manipulating the knee. I didn't even get an MRI the first time. If he can move the knee in ways it isn't supposed to move, there is a good chance the ACL is torn. This movement is also possible with a bad sprain since it will relieve tension on the ligament, but I would imagine it would be worse with a tear. Hopefully you're right about the double pop just being the ligament moving.

Being this many weeks out and still not having range of motion back would be a concern though - time to get serious with ice, elevating it and ibuprofen. MRI will tell all if you go ahead with one. If covered by insurance I'd do it for sure, for confirmation and peace of mind. My first go round the ER thought it was just a sprain since I had no swelling and told me to see a doc in 6-8 weeks if it wasn't better. It was, mostly, and I was back riding by then but would have occasions when the knee would buckle underneath me if I stepped back or with certain twisting motions. I didn't have that same instability issue this time around which is why I was surprised it was ACL again. Guess the strength had built up to overcome that this time.

I did have surgery back in early May (tore ACL late March) so I am 3 months along. It took 9 days til I had enough range of motion to do a pedal stroke on the trainer. Maybe 3 weeks to get almost full ROM back. I was riding trainer a lot + exercises, and doing flat rides around the neighborhood at that point. It was at the 2-month mark I was cleared to ride pavement, 3-month mark (today's appt) to start running and told one more month to resume trail riding and that I should keep wearing my brace through the six month mark. I've been cheating a bit the whole time but taking it very easy anytime on dirt, and always wearing my brace.

So yeah there is a fairly long recovery period. It would be longer if we had used patellar tendon or cadaver graft for the repair. We used hamstring from my other knee since it has shorter recovery time hoping I'd be back on the trail in time for cooler fall temps. I was fortunate on timing since I ride less in summer, this was the best time to have this happen. The good news is you can ride without ACL if that turns out to be what happened. I went almost 2 years the first time. So you can pick a date if repair is needed. I've been able to keep myself busy doing all the projects and checking things out around town that I never get to because I'm always out riding. And some of the rides I would have wanted to do have been cut off by smoke. Hopefully by Labor day that will have cleared out.

Good luck!

Not here nor there in the big scheme of life's things, but I am happy to report a positive update. Went to LC again this morning for my 2nd trail ride in 8 weeks. Improvement! I'd arranged to go back to the ortho, but by the time they were ready to set an appointment, I'd already seen another level of betterness/healing, so I bailed out.

I took it easy again today with only one loop, but there were no janky clicks, clunks or movements outside where they should be. Still did not do Nascar, but did ride up it at the tail end of it, turned around and jumped the last double. No problems. I have 80-90% range of motion back, so will concentrate on stretching it out the next week or two. Getting prepped for Eastern Sierra trip soon, and SO stoked I will be able to ride. :w00t:
