I was up in Eugene dropping off my son at University of Oregon. A little research pointed me in the right direction, the McKenzie River Trail, 26 miles of the most incredible scenery you can ask for. Add this one to your bucket list, it's worth it! Took the shuttle up to the trail head. This trail seems to be popular with female Canadian riders, ran into 5 (!) mountain bikers from Kamloops Canada. What a fun ride and experience! And to top it off we sampled the local hot springs after the ride...

Next visit to Eugene, hit the trails in Oakridge and Westfir. It's the stuff MBO has their festivals around.

*ALL* of those trails up there are pretty much top notch stuff. I loved the top 2/3 of the McKenzie River Trail and would go back in a heartbeat but I could have done without the last 6-8 miles as it seemed pretty repetitive; beautiful but repetitive. The nearby O'Leary Trail is my favorite trail in that area. It's also a shuttle for all but ultra super humans. As mtbchip mentioned, the Oakridge area 45 miles east of Eugene has alot of great riding with 1/10th the people that the MRT usually has on a typical day.

However, as good as all those trails are, my absolute favorite up there is the North Umpqua River Trail. I think it's 65-70 miles total and we did (3) sections of it this summer for a total of about 55 miles. It was all great stuff but by far, the best day was Dread & Terror; named by the forest service as a definition of what it would be like if there was ever a fire back there.

If you're the type that would do a guided tour, Cog Wild Tours up in Bend has a new "Ultimate Oregon" package that includes the MRT, King's Castle, several day in Oakridge and the North Umpqua. It isn't cheap but it is a bargain once it's all said and done. They provide transportation, shuttles, all you food & beverages plus they prepare all of your meals which in my experience have all been EXCELLENT.

I recently did the Hot Sisters Hot Springs Route, which includes the NUT and MRT. Had a great time. http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/18398 if you care to see some pics

edit: is King's Castle between Cougar Dam and Rainbow? Really good too!

Yeah, King's Castle is just past Rainbow so I'm sure that's the one you're talking about. Next time you're up that way, shuttle up higher to the O'Leary Trail which you can then hook into King's Castle and ride it all the way down to Hwy 126. Many people think that O'Leary is the best "non-river" trail in Oregon.

Thanks for another good crazyguyonabike read. I did not work for 40 minutes as I enjoyed your latest adventure vicariously.

I also really liked your writeup. Great pics.
I didn't know there were that many dirty hippies around hot springs. Go figger.

One question I have regarding your Ali reference. I've always been a big Ali fan, and I didn't get your ref.
I'm prolly just too dull. Age-related early onset dementia or somethin'.
