Also, in case you hadn't seen this yet, from Jan. 15:

Santee officially OK's Marine Corps activities

Quote:
SANTEE — The Marine Corps has been given the OK to conduct surveillance training in Santee.

The City Council on Wednesday approved an agreement with the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command that allows for Marines - without uniforms, insignia, weapons or other visible indications of military presence - to observe crowds and perform surveillance training in public and commercial locations in the city.

...

"What they'll do is trek across Miramar right into Santee, basically go from open scrub into the city," Voepel said. "They may even come in through Mission Trails or through Fanita Ranch across different areas by the Santee Lakes. They'll have to make an immediate transition from the brush to an urban environment. Their job is to blend in."

Seeing the Marines attempt to "blend in" should be interesting, especially if any of them are not white.

All the Marines need to do to Blanding and just put on a bike helmet and some baggy shorts. I still have not seen anyone post an actual first-hand experience of getting a ticket at Sycamore or Mission trails from the Marines

Rode there twice last week. I just got back from a ride out there this morning, No Marines sighted, I did run into Johnny Lawman (Sheriff) in a truck last week, He said there are reports of people shooting Coyotes (the 4 legged kind) in the park at night. I guess the (hunters?) are also building illegal campfires Those might be from the 2 legged Coyote..

I ride from the Poway end and turned around at the power lines near the water plant, so I didn't do the climb up to, Switchbacks or any thing other than the main trail along the fence line on that side of the park.

BTW the trails in Sycamore Canyon are awesome right now. Martha's is a little rough (thanks to the C.C.C.'s "trail maintenance attempt) But the trail through the oak grove in great shape.

The lawman may have better luck patrolling at night if he's looking for illegal campfires. Probably not too many campfires in the early afternoon with temps in the mid 70's.

That would require work and commitment for the betterment of all so.... no they won't. Let's just kick out the scum bikers and call it good, then go to lunch

I think they're looking for motos and vehicle traffic out there. There are jeeps, side by sides, and motos out there regularly now and neighbors bordering the Fanita ranch property are getting tired of the noise and traffic. I have a feeling that they are part of the reason for the patrols.

Once the Castle Rock development begins things will really hit the fan with increased mtb traffic at the other entrances.

I am really concerned about this. It's already a zoo sometimes in those neighborhoods.

If that area gets shut down I may end up opening some veins.

It was late in the afternoon, just before sunset. And it has been getting down into the 40's here in Poway at night. If you know where to look, there are rock and concrete fire rings hidden out there that have been used for years. I, myself would never, ever, ever, use one of those rings on a night ride. People also get their pets taken by Coyotes around here all the time so there just may be a, pissed off, former, pet owner running around down there looking for payback. I think it goes without saying that the Sheriff always has an eye out for illegal off roading but he was certainly not looking to hassle me or MTB'ers.

I don't know how many people read this site but I find it amazing that there are no first-hand accounts of people getting tickets at Sycamore. Anyone, ever? If not this sure is a pervasive and ugly urban rumor

I think the same question was asked about the tickets (?) at DMM. I personally don't remember anyone posting one up to view either

I have no first hand experience, but I know a few people who got tickets.

Most tended to be up Cat Canyon or elsewhere, beyond the signs. I think a couple had to pay a fine and one basically had it reduced to a warning in court with the message, don't get caught again.

In other news I heard the opening in the fence at the end of Strathmore has been blocked again and it looks pretty legit this time.

Is that a ticket or a warning since there wasn't a court date or fee listed on it
