What is an Epic?

Great question isn't it? Many people have different definitions of the word. Some might even say, it is often over used. Whatever your reason is for using the word, i'm sure in some sense in your own right. You've done justice for using the word, epic.

for me, the meaning of the word epic is to do something which i thought is great, something i've not done before and something that didn't come easy.

I am going to tell you of a ride that i am planning as we speak that involves meticulous planning and i will update everyone from beginning to the end the hurdles, challenges, the lows and the highs. I will let you decide if it is epic or not.

But for now, let's start with this question.

What have you done lately or in the distant past that you considered epic?

When I say "that ride was Epic", I'm more or less saying it was unbelievably cool/awesome and inferring that it is a "must ride" if you ever go there.

However, based on what I read on the world wide web, many people believe an Epic is more of a "trip of a lifetime where you're gone for days, weeks" like magazine articles.

"Epic post, man." Welcome to DT. I agree the term is overused, but still understood in context. To me, an epic ride is not just long, or great, or classic. It is those things, but also must involve some amount of unexpected struggle. Like the original epic stories, where they went on long voyages and battled sirens and minotaurs. And trolls.

I am going to attempt an epic. This weekend BCT just a short section it says mostly down hill. I think I have to drive 50 someodd miles to shuttle that also should be epic.
An epic is something new to me that I think will enlighten me.

"Epic" describes rides that other people do; I don't know that I've ever used that term to describe one of my own.

I've not done that one. Isn't that over 100 miles or so?

In all honesty, i think the word Epic is a state of mind. It can not be quantified by miles, distance, descent, ascent alone.

Take for example Leadville, it is a high altitude race that goes for 100 miles or so. But to the racers doing the race, to them it is epic. To most "soul riders" organized race sponsored by so many bike companies might not consider that epic.
