The sanitization blows but the reality is that 99% of the people at Iron Mtn are hikers. I like running it too and prefer it to be more technical but it's such a popular trail I'm not surprised they are working on it. Lots of old people, kids, and fat people on that trail. I think it's a lost cause and a better strategy may be too refocus to keep Ellie Lane rugged. Ellie probably gets <5% of the use Iron does, I usually only see a few people when I'm on it and they are more hardcore. It doesn't have the same view from the top as Iron, and most people aren't strong enough to do both, so I don't think it will ever be that popular for hikers.

Anyone own a sign shop? We need some of these at the trailhead, and a bell box too:

Well, its been close to 3 years, still a wide smooth-fest? Have the intense rains brought it back to its natural glory?
Hmm, I enjoy dark ales.

I rode it Christmas Morning for the sun rise and to beat the traffic ( still plenty of avid hikers out ) The top half of the trail is still all rocked up and quite Technical. As for the bottom half its super smooth fast flowing double wide bike park style, the rain ( what rain? ) isn't affecting it at all, aside from a few sections which get nice and rough. Needless to say I only rode it once before they Sanitized it ( some time circa 2003 ) so I don't really know what it was like before. I think it is a great mix of everything, even gave me a broken wrist and an ER visit for Christmas. Yay for bikes.

If only there was a way to trick the hikers to go some where else...

And a lift to the top... Air-conditioned gondola with rotating cars and someone to load and unload your bike would be perfect... :flame:

Yeah, there hasn't been enough rain for the rocks to germinate, but the "massacre effect" is pretty much gone and it's a good, multiuse trail. Let me know how that club membership goes.

Seriously. It takes way more rainfall for rocks to grow.

Hiked/rode from Ellie Ln yesterday.

Ellie Lane trail is still rugged and a bitch. Lots of HAB up to Table rock and then again to the second pass. Once we topped out, most of it was ride worthy to the Iron Mountain trail head.

Iron Mountain upper trail is a strange place. Recently, they have added water bars made of rock and dirt. No, not water bars, more like water MOUNTAINS. These things are 2+ feet tall and every 30 feet in a couple of sections. The rocks used are 300 lbs boulders. Not sure what run off they were planing for but these are river redirecting dikes. We ran out of time so I cannot say how good/bad the tip top was.

On the descent down the main trail, all was good until we came to the point where the trail splits, giving you two choices, old trail or new(several years old). We went left and took the newer alignment. For water diversion, rather than adding the crazy huge water bars like above, they have dug water ditches. I do mean ditches. They are a foot deep, spade width wide, and vertical on both sides. Add to that the mound of tailings on the down slop side AND they are no more than 30 feet apart for the entire length of the trail makes for a poor experience for all users. I am willing to bet some hiker will roll their ankle soon. It was crazy.

Who ever did this trail "maintenance" did not know what they were doing.
