I just back from a work trip and found about this. Me and Barcy rode there this AM. Pretty much a freeway (we climbed all but a few short sections on SSers) Anyway we talked to a local and he said city of poway is taking all the way to the top on all the trails. His understanding is that its to make the trails sustainable in the long term. Apologies in advance if this has already been annunciated; doing this from my phone and I don't have time to read entire thread.
Hope this information helps

I uploaded some photos to my gallery of the work that was done up there. seems some of it was helpfull maybe and some of it was shocking. they made it pretty darn wide in some areas thats for sure. but iron mt wont be tamed, it will fight back. give it a couple of years for some of the brush to grow back and some rain to fall. ...(I hope). :|

haven't been to iron mtn, so take this with a very, very, very small grain of salt; the rains may bring some of the rocks to the surface, but from the pics i've seen on mtn bike bill, it will take much more than a few rains and a few years.

then again, as my wife reminds me, i'm always wrong. let's hope i'm consistent as well.

--------------------

it seems in san diego any significant trail work, as los eluded to, needs to be approved by civilian committees, passed to the politicos to see if anyone with money (and horses) objects, and maybe, someday move forward, cautiously, laterally, at some point in the time space continuum.

i don't know the protocol in poway- do they need to submit through a similar approval process or does the land manager have a free call?

I am going to talk about the state of MTBing in general, because I have never ridden I.Mt, and because I see a lareger trend at work. I was a skateboarder a long time before I was a mountain biker so all the BS about Rangers(COPS) and local government is nothing new to me. We would skate the F out of a spot because we new it was only a matter of time till the cops would show up, or they put thoese stupid bumps on the curbs or rails.100% of street skating is a "potch". the best we could hope for was a skate park. But all they turn out to be is a sanitized playground with supervision and posably a fee. And on top of that you can't skate the same spot every day. So parks are at best another place to ride, and pick up some new tricks you can try on the street (make conections to mtb parks if you want). I thought I had grown up and joined a respected group that was full of responsable adults that paid there taxes, AND WERE TREATED AS SUCH. I could see being treated like a kid who was trespassing and causing property damage when that was exactly what I was doing. But it seems it's all the same. The man dose what he wants and We The People fight and fight til the man gives in and we end up with "what we wanted" (AKA what the Man gives us). If this was a true democacy there would be a checklist at the end of your tax form and you could say where your money whent. That would change things real quick! After all it all comes down to money in the end anyway.

Sorry to post on somthing old and dead but my point is: ride the F out of the trails we have now because they may be gone one day. And hit me up, I would love to see your favorite trail befor it gets sanitized, the cops show up, or they build a house on it. I bet the rest of us would to.

great interviews guys.

but who the hell gets interviewed on a baby blue toy bike with candy green cables and white wheels and expects to get taken seriously. geez, sell some ice-cream or throw some tassels on that sucker and call it a day.

funny, the guy liking the trails and said he fell down forgot to mention he was on his cell phone when he fell. or at least that's the story a little birdie told me.

Went out there with my daughter yesterday, at first I was thinking yeah they sanitized it; but kinda rationalized that for the number of weekend warriors and families with kids using it that it kinda made sense.

Then I saw the spots where they wiped out like 12 foot wide sections of trail to fill and level spots that probably didn't need any filling or leveling to begin with. Yes the rotted/undercut water bars needed some TLC before someone broke a leg on them, but they wiped out huge sections of trail and installed a fire road in its place. the top still looks pretty natural, and even my 9 yo daughter thought it was fun to hike on the natural "rock steps" up there.

Bet it's all wiped out with the first rains this fall though.
