Exactly. Even kids, hikers, average folks can appreciate the rugged beauty and challenge. If it were just like your neighborhood jogging trail, there wouldn't be much point in driving there. I've never tried it on my bike, but I've hiked it round trip from Ellie Lane many times over the years, even my wife has, and dumbing it down just destroys what makes it special.

You know what? Just be patient. In a season or two it will be right back to great. You're in this for the long haul, right?

Yep - hiked IM with my son and his girlfriend on Saturday. The "scraped" looking parts of the trail look much better now. Another year of growth should tighten up the wide spots. It will come back

its not the 'widening' that pissed some of us off....it was the 'sanitation' (aka: REMOVING FUCKIN ROCKS AND MAKING IT FLATER THAN A FUCKIN-FUCKS-SAKE SIDEWALK) that got us pissed.

The long haul, just how long do you think, surely not a couple rainy seasons...Im lulzing over that.
How about a wager....
If it goes back to the original state it was in after a season or two of rains, I'll plunk some money down and join SDMBA (ya'll know my stance, so thats some mighty big talk from me), if it doesnt revert back to what it originally was after a couple seasons (2), you buy the beer for the next big Dirt Treader ride in 2013.

This trail, a good portion of it has been sanitized to a degree that a couple seasons worth of rains will not bring it back to what it was.
The upper portion is still intact sure, but the sanitization that was done cannot be corrected with rains. Seriously, to believe different or to try to tell people different is a sugarcoating of very high order.

So, how is it, now? I think we're going to hike it next weekend and I sure hope there aren't any rocks I might trip over or that could impede my walker, er... "flow".

After I see it, I'll see whether to take up the Sloth on the beer bet, but the bet will involve either party buying beer! The "long haul" means more than a season in most cases and it's certainly true that rocks ain't gonna grow back after that massacre, but the tread will narrow and the trail will renew itself as long as the scrape-team stay off it.

Mt. Woodson 8' path, anyone?

Fellers I was riding Iron Mtn when it was being chopped. A CDF fire crew did it for training I told them
It's a very hike able trail and they said they were only doing what the trail boss had ordered.

The top section was not messed with as far as I know. I do miss long uninterrupted flow but for now that is my urinal in this fuckin hospital
Bed.

I rode Ellie Lane today and there were two CDF crew trucks parked on the lower part of the Iron Mtn trail. I could hear them using chainsaws further up the trail. I'm not looking forward to seeing what they did to it.

The week before last, Ride00 and myself rode Iron mountain twice. That trail did not need ANY work. It was rugged, shitty, and beat to hell...just the way I like it. I'm going out there tomorrow for another beating so maybe I will see where CDF wasted time and money.

The trail is at least 6-8 feet wide in its narrowest places. I can't imagine what they felt they needed to cut with chainsaws.

They're probably trying to make it drivable by Honda Accord so everyone can enjoy the views without doing any work to get there.

You mean like it used to be… sorta…

It was drivable by moto and 4WD back in the day; or so I'm told.
