Which have the best ass pads? I currently run the Lycra Performance Century Gel Short under my fox shorts. I'd like to wear one pair of shorts in the future.

I am currently using the Pearl Izumi Attack shorts. They are the best i have used. I would like to try the higher level PI shorts but I don't want to spend $100 plus for a pair of lycra's. Once you use a high quality short with a nice chamois it is almost impossible to return to stuff like what comes with Fox shorts.

You know I'm seriously considering bibs for the longer rides & getting some tougher outer shorts, like the troy lee's shorts.

Good topic as I've been trying to decide myself to see which shorts or bibs for the long rides.

I wouldn't mind trying some bibs. I know that Hoser and Super G use them and swear by them.

Bibs are great, remember you're buying more for length of the supports vs the diamter of the waist area. That said, I'm super thin but 6' tall, nothing fits me right.

I have been a fan of Nema shorts for years. Until I exceeded the gross weight of the shorts. Now its whatever I can squeeze my Clyde butt into. I think I might order a couple pair of Hoss shorts. I hear they are Clyde friendly not sure about comfort though.

I wear the "foam" version of the Century shorts under a pair of thin nylon cargo shorts and has been the best combination I've found. I like the two layer approach because it moves the friction point between the layers versus between the chamois and my but.

Not to mention, I haven't found a pair of shorts with a decent built in chamois for under $100.

In general, I've had problems with any shorts that have a liner in them, Zoic, Pearl Izumi, etc. Either the short fits my waist, but then I swim in the liner (doesn't support). Or the liner fits like it should, but then the waist is too small.

I've using the Hoss Ponderosa shorts for a solid year now that have a built in chamois. I got them at BB last year at their Aug sale for $40 ($50 retail). I've been really happy with them for most rides up to 2 hrs and longer, but now they're not supporting nearly as good as when they were new. You really can't get a better short for the price (even at retail). Their Stallion short is basically board shorts w/ a detachable chamois liner which I have yet to try.

Two weeks ago I tried a pair of Endura Hummvee 3/4 shorts on my 54 mi weekend epic. The snapout liners are definitely "compression" shorts and have a really good chamois for the 9 hours we were out on Day 1. Pricey retail, but I snagged these off of Chain Love for a sweet price just to try them. I'm looking forward to wearing these way more. http://www.endurasport.com

Other than that, I still occassionally wear Performance Century lycra shorts under board or cargo shorts that aren't bulky and can breathe.

My personal preference are my Giordana Laser bibs. I throw a pair of board shorts over top and roll. I personally believe bibs rule. I have 5 pairs now and doubt I'll buy another pair of regular shorts.

Bibs. You won't go back to regular shorts. Out of Pearl Izumi, Bellweather, Voler and Capo Forma I like the Capo's the best. You get what you pay for where bibs are concerned.

You may also want to try a sleveless base layer: warmer when it's cool and cooler when it's warm (think wet t-shirt) and an extra layer in case you crash. Ghetto way to do it is wear two jerseys.

Too funny. I still have my old hockey pants too. They would be great for brush avoidance or padding your thigh against impact with the bars as you fly over them. But they wouldn't do anything at all for the crucial arse-saddle interface.
