Have you considered a Giro Zen? It has protection that goes further down the back of your head and still breathes like your ordinary road helmet. It's spendy for $130 but well made. It's almost like the open face Troy Lee helmet in your post but has all the big vents.

I tried to save some money and bought the Fox Flux and somewhat regret the decision. It comfortable, vents well and light, but the visor pops off very easily. You're bound to hit a branch or two and it sucks to stop and retrieve it when it gets snagged on a branch. The Zen's visor pivots up and down so you get more functionality and it stays put.

All that said though, there are some good FF helmets out there. Go try them all on, each manufacturer feels different, padding, shape, chin straps -- it's your head, I wouldn't go cheap on it.

I was thinking that i'd like to err on the side of more protection even though I ride xc. I didnt want to go full face but I saw this. It doesnt have vent holes and it comes over the ears. I prolly know my own answer which is yes, too hot but I wish they'd make a model like this but with vent holes. Any thoughts from peeps that ride/ridden full face helmets?

Both a full face and that TLD open face are way too hot for xc.

While you could certainly try wearing them, the heat would wear you down quickly making it more likely you would crash as both your strengh and mental ability would suffer. Same thing happens toward the end of a long ride.

If you want more protection but without overheating try a bmx helmet or one of the MTB helmets that has more side/back protection. You wouldn't have protection on the front of your face but in my experience that is seldom needed - unless you're going at warp speed you can usually get your arms out to protect your face or tuck & roll.

A light pair of knee pads on the other hand are worth the weight/heat penalty as I found out a couple months ago....

Yeah, riding without pads and ff is for sissys... uh, oh, what?

No better workout than riding ff and impact suit when the Santa Anas blow.

:domo: Yes! Helmet! Helmet!!! I'm gettin' ready for winter: 661 pressure suit!

For good measure: the only reason I was carrying an extra helmet dragging my bike up pinball was because someone advised me a ff might be too hot (it was well meant, so I bear no ill will) :hello: . Given the lack of experience of riding at altitude (let alone anywhere else) I was gullible. But I shall remain strong in the face of adversity. ff all the way, every way! :domo:

Excellent! That would be so great if you race in that. At the starting line they are going to try and tell you that you need to wear a helmet etc.

BTW yall, my girl got me a sweet helmet cam for Chanukah...and that MET Parachute should be here any day. I got myself a dope black and gold fox jersey with skulls that matrches my bike....stylin now. If I can just ride as fast as I will be cool...

Way, way, way too hot.

I've seen quite a few peeps with a FF that used this one a MET sold in europe now may be able to find one in the US. I would rock this one if I was going full face. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=17687

I have a Giro Remdy it's very hot (but comfortable). I've been sporting a Red & black MET for about 6/7 months now. The MET is cool I don't overheat like I did with the Giro. I can eat, drink from my camelback or bottle no problem. The only thing I don't like is the adjustment in back is a bit cheese.
