Ditch those Avids! You can get very reliable Shimano SLX hydro on sale at very reasonable cost. Much better than mech. Best brake value I think.

[ Edit: I just checked back, and I installed my SLX brakes over six years ago. A few weeks ago I did a simple bubble bleed at the rear master cylinder. That is the first time I’ve done anything to them other than new pads. Granted I don’t rack up the mileage you do, but I do ride every weekend. ]

You can guarantee they won’t go out going down the hill again. I have a set of mechanical been using for 18 years never gave out on me. Thank you for the deal and time. I guess I am just getting old and cranky

^^^ No guarantees on anything. I do have a 16 year old bike with BB7’s that still work fine. They stop okay, but nothing like hydro, and they require manual adjustment and cable replacement occasionally. I understand the troglodytic desire for simplicity— I’m somewhat that way myself — but I’ll take the SLX over the BB7 anytime.

^^^ You know, when I read about the guy getting bike jacked at Hodges for an Orange Niner, getting shot and then not giving his name, I briefly thought it might be him. But then I realized that was impossible, because the perp got away alive.

Although it was nice and shady in Vietnam this morning, I only lingered long enough to walk back up that steep and loose descent into the jungle to clear the sticks someone had placed crosswise on the trail. Mostly small and rotten, which was good since I couldn’t stop. I left the baby heads as I kinda like ‘em. Then vamoosed since the polio pits were abuzz with mosquitoes. Don’t want no stinkin’ dengue fever!
