Sitting on raptor ridge enjoying the silence when a lone coyote saunters up about 15 feet from me, stands there for about 2 minutes, then heads down for dinner. So frigging cool being out there enjoying the nothingness of it all but so close to the urban frenzy

I didn’t know what this trail system was but it is the 24 hour in old Pueblo north of Tucson.

Curious how you found it without knowing what it was? It's kinda out of the way...

I am going to do some more of the Arizona trail next week and looked on Mountain bike project for trails near by. It doesn’t specify the trail system it just gives you names of trails and a location. It does say that you need to have a Arizona trust lands permit to use this trail system though so I feel safe camping here with one. It does have a out of the way feel I have only seen one Jeep and no one else for two days but it is a three day weekend might have to change camp site Saturday. I think I am going to the bike swap meet in Tucson on Sunday and meet up with my brother. I found out about it on meetup I joined the SAMBA a couple years ago and they use a meetup for rides and stuff.
While I have your attention what is your favorite 15 miles of the Arizona trail from Freeman road north to lost gold mine trail area?

Not sure where you are referring to. Lost Goldmine trail is at Gold Canyon in Apache Junction. Arizona Trail doesn't go anywhere near it. Freeman Road is down south of Kelvin. AZT does cross it.

The section of AZT north of Freeman Rd is ok but not great, pretty flat-ish trail with no views that alternates with jeep road sections. https://www.trailforks.com/trails/azt-t ... mountains/. You could do a loop of it with jeep roads but it wouldn't be a great ride. Normally we'll ride that segment from Freeman Road north and then ride the Ripsey segment, which is very cool and best ridden south to north. https://www.trailforks.com/trails/azt-n ... mountains/. Together they're a 28 mile ride. You could loop Ripsey by going up Ripsey Wash from Florence-Kelvin Hwy but that would be a sandy hike to the trail. You'd need Trailforks or MTB proj to find the trail there.

Some good rides in the area are Oracle State Park. AZT goes through there and there are other trails to make loops with. It's on Trailforks. Catalina State Park and 50-year you've probably ridden but if not it is fun. Also requires state land permit. Lastly I haven't ridden it but there is a trail network at Casa Grande that could be fun for a couple hours.

The section of AZT that is my favorite, and one of my favorite rides anywhere is just north from Superior (Picketpost) to Kelvin. Its a big ride at 36mi and 6,000ft but has some of the most spectacular scenery around. You can ride it as an out and back from Picketpost. There are a few turnaround points people often use at 7 miles (crossing of FR4), 10mi, 12mi (top of Martinez Canyon) and 14mi (before dropping into Gila canyons) depending how much time they have. The segment north of Picketpost is pretty decent too and can be looped by going up FR650 to one of several road crossings.

Just heading down Serpentine. His first night ride. It was pretty cold in the low spots tonight. We heard lots of coyotes, which spooked him a little, but saw none. He loved it.

It HAS been a while since I've been riding in AZ. Last time I was there, I didn't need no stinking permit.......
