I just bought a bike and plan to start getting my fitness and legs back. Going the water bottle route instead of a pack. I'm looking for suggestions on tools that I can carry on the bike. Trying to avoid carrying a pack. I have seen some that go in the bars, some that go in the stem, some that can mount next to the water bottle.
Any suggestions?

Be like Shannon, ride with
someone that carries everything.

Mechanicals don’t happen that often anymore.
I would suggest a good multi tool, a QuickLink,
and CO2 and tire bacon.
As to where carry it, I’m not sure,
I usually wear a pack.

What bike did you get???!

I'm thinking about doing the one up tool that either fits inside the fork or inside of a pump. Then maybe strap a tube to the frame somewhere just in case shit really gets bad.

I bought a 5010.

I’m still using a pack. But welcome back, and show us your bike.

Lately I’ve been putting them in a small matchbox so they don’t get broken.

Since I started with old school (pre pack) stuff, I like to go with water bottle and bike storage as much as I can.

On a hard tail it's easy, 2 bottles and Lezyne saddle bag and pump.

On full sus, more challenging. You could test by dropping seat and letting air out of shock to fully compress and see how much space you have between tire and saddle, if you can fit a bag great.

You have the water bottle cage, but I'd look at one of these to have bottle + tools and a pump.

https://www.bikemag.com/gear/versus-cage-fight/

You can also add a frame strap bag, I have the Dekine, but doing it again, I'd put frame protector on where this is mounted (both the bag and strap cause wear)

https://www.dakine.com/products/gripper?variant=33209067372624

As for what to carry I'd have the following.
MultiTool (I like Lezyne or the below over priced Ritchey which I have)
Image
Tube
Self adhesive Patch kit
Inflation device (pump or CO2)
Tire Lever
Quick link

I don't but should add a tubeless patch kit (but I know Harley has one!)
These come in many shapes and sizes. Here's one from Much off that are "Bar Ends"

I like that one that goes in the bar ends. I bought a one up tool for the stem today. Also a pump that I will mount next to the water bottle. I plan to strap a tube to the bike somewhere. Phone and ID can go in pocket.

I don’t think a tube is necessary.
Most of the time there are tons
of thorns and goat heads in the tire.

By the time you put a tube in and
air up the tire the tube is punctured.

Ask FredE!

So just a good fill of fluid in the tires, plugs/patches and a pump/co2?

I would strongly consider a hip pack. When I went from full shoulder pack to hip, it was liberating. No more constriction. If you get one that fits you, you won't know it's there, and it will be easier than trying to fit all your stuff on your bike.

The few things that Harley isn't packing for me, I carry in my hip pack, plus, since my frame happens to have storage, I carry some extra junk in it. One water bottle goes on the side of the hip pack, and the other in a cage on the frame. Will probably get another hip pack with capability to pack two bottles though, so I can have the safety net of three full bottle on hot day longer rides. Really hate the idea of going back to a full pack.

And a tube is a good idea imo, at least on longer rides. It's true that thorns aren't an issue for tubeless, but even with heavy casing, I've slashed at least four tires over time (mostly sidewalls). where sealant would not do the trick. Only a tube would do. Don't forget to pack some tire levers.

Congrats on the new whip.

I highly recommend the book “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. It has nothing to do with bikes. It’s about men in war, the Vietnam war in this instance. I’m just throwing this out there for DirtReaders, to keep this going while we await 24v’s next avatar.
