I recently purchased a NINER sir 9 hard tail for bikepacking intentions. I was attempting to install a Kenda 29x2.2 tire on a StansNoTubes wheelset ZTR Crest 29er ( max 2.2) vintage 2008 nothing like anything on current website. Inside width of rim measured 21mm. I left the tire in the sun for a day to relax and soak up some rays. I thought I would try something different. The rim was already taped, I installed the tubeless stem, put the tire on and inflated until it seated, close to max pressure. It inflated fine. I put the tire in the fork, spun it and it hit the fork in one section. Being a Dumb Ass Physicist, I thought I would inflate it at a higher pressure and let pressure straighten it out. Did you guys hear the boom when the tire blew off the rim? Not knowing what to do I reinstalled the tire and re-inflated to less than max pressure. It stayed but after a light bounce, did you hear the boom? Do you see a commercial here?

To get to the point, if I reseat the tire, put the Stans in the tube, rotate it spin it, do all the normal stuff do you think the tire will seal like knew or was the bead stretched? I've had to use a lever each time I mounted it. I do not want to repeat the not so pleasant experience of a bead breaking and blow the tire off while riding. When I sent pictures of the wire bead brake in the tire to Bontrager, the response was I obviously did not know how to install a tire. This happened on a tire off the showroom floor on a Gary Fisher MTB.

What pressure was it at each time it blew?

I inflate until the tire seats and then air down to low 20s PSI. Then shake sealant around and let it sit flat overnight.

If there is a break in the wire bead, you need a new tire.

all the inflations have been done dry with a hand pump. tire blew off at 62 psi max 50 psi. The second time I inflated at 40 psi dropped the tire from 12"-18". I've inspected the bead and I can see no signs of stretching or disfiguration.

I think I will install the tire again only this time on the rear (less probability of undesirable outcome), fill it with Stans, make sure it is seated and sealed at a lower tire pressure and Apply some weight and pressure in the backyard. After it holds, take it out on the trails. Worst case will be a five mile walk and very wet shoes.

You said the wire bead was broken. Throw the tire away. And on the next one, don’t install it dry. Use some soapy water on the bead all the way around both sides. It helps the bead slide into place instead of suddenly popping. And never go over 45 psi on a mountain bike tire per Stan’s.

This bead did not break. Do you remember the Bontrager tire on which the bead tore on my GF on a book ride at Calavera. Fred had some Duct tape and we almost made it back to the car That's what I was referring to. Sorry I was not clear enough. I was just pointing out it could be rude if the tire came off while riding.

You're right. I would trust the tire with a tube but tubeless may be questionable. I am still waffling. I'll probably make the decision the night before the ride.

^^^ Oh, okay, if the bead is not broken, try again with soapy water and less pressure.

Let's put this to rest. I mounted the tire using soapy water. Not really that much easier. It's on an secure. It's sealed but...……, the tire'e outside knobs (~ 4) ( mounted it on rear this time) hits the chain stay. The wheel was trued yesterday. I don't believe you can screw up a rim that much by installing a tire so I suspect the tire is out of true and there is probably a problem with the casing. So I get a new tire regardless.

Think KaBoom Twice. Ring...ing… The good news is Kenda is sending me a replacement tire. It only required a few exchanged emails with a video.

Unlike Bontrager tire on which the bead broke while riding and several exchanged emails. Bontrager finally replied I should learn how to install a tire. The tire was already installed when I purchased the bike. Maybe they should teach TREK dealers how to install tires. In defense, the tire performed very well until it self destructed. I have a second one, the mate, that is only for extreme emergencies, i.e. spare tire on road trip.
