In case you missed this on PB, it’s kind of hypnotic in slo-mo, and pretty cool to see how the different rear suspension designs work.

Played this through a couple of times while stopping, backing up, and forwarding. It's scary to see how the first yeti, the green bike (?), and the Kona flexed badly at the fork & head tube area.
Doesn't surprise me that the Pivot was the best, strongest, most confidence inspiring of the lot and that's a totally unbiased opinion.

^^^ Haha, you Homer! But yeah, some bikes had some weird shit going on at the front! That green bike is a Stumpy. The Firebird and Bronson looked especially smooth. But keep in mind not all the landings were identical. I think the flex is mostly in the forks rather than frames.

The two forks were Fox and the other was RS but yes, both forks did some weird shit

watching rear suspension some of those have crazy jerky / non linear movement. Thought he was going to eat it on the gt

Is best not to watch such videos. They have a way of worming their content into the subconscious brain.
Makes for strange brain hiccups while riding.
Not to mention brainfarts.......

Mesmerizing! A few takeaways:
  • In all of these, the tires take the initial hit, in most cases completely deforming before the suspension ever becomes active. If you've ever wondered how pinch-flats happen, you'll see it here. (I wonder if the test bikes were all running the same tire pressure, since they didn't all deform by the same degree).
  • Fork flex. In most cases, the fork initially flexes forward (increasing the HA) almost before it starts compressing, and then flexes rearward (decreasing the HA) as it bottoms out its travel. As the fork flexes rearward, it looks like it pulls the tire back - making it appear to roll backward!
  • Chain movement (and resulting rotation of the derailleur cage). A little surprising, since I assume these are all modern clutch-style derailleurs. Makes me want to consider getting my old Bionicon C-Guide out of the parts bin.
  • For the two Yeti's: I didn't see any movement in their sliding "Switch Infinity" links. Maybe it's just too subtle to see?

Some tips/hints on playback if you really want to analyze this frame-by-frame:
  1. Open the video in Youtube, instead of viewing it "embedded" here on DT, by clicking the Youtube link in the lower right corner of the vid
  2. Hit the 'f' key or click the [] fullscreen icon on the lower right corner, to view it in fullscreen
  3. Hit the spacebar or the 'K' key to pause playback
  4. Hit the left/right arrow keys to rewind/advance in 5-second increments
  5. Hit 'J' or 'L' keys to rewind/advance in 10-second increments
  6. While paused, hit the ',' (comma) or '.' (dot/period) to rewind or advance one frame at a time
