Hey all,

I ran across this article on PB: https://www.pinkbike.com/news/finding-y ... width.html

It's written by MTB coach Lee McCormack and talks about an easy way to find your "ideal" handlebar width. It also talks about some benefits/drawbacks of wide bars. The best part about this article is that he gives you a dead-simple formula for figuring out a good starting point for your bar width.

If you’re male, multiply your height in millimeters by 0.440.
If you’re female, multiply your height in millimeters by 0.426.

I'm 5'9" which translates to 1752.6mm which leads to a handlebar width of 771 mm for me. My current bars came stock at 800mm and were cut down to 780 mm. This means I'm just a tad wide from "ideal". According to Lee, this is better for bashing rocks but harder on my shoulders and worse for pushing and pulling. He also says that wider bars seem to be almost all disadvantage. Based on this, I will consider moving my controls 5 mm in per side to simulate the narrow bars. To be honest, I don't have enough experience with different bar widths to have a good feel on my own.

Cheers,
Mike

Based on this picture, had Belizean been running a handlebar wider than his current 660mm setup, he would have been forced to setup on this chute to a catch turn much farther to his rider's right. Fred's bar width is "faster" than World Champ Nino Schuster's winning setup.

“Pick a handlebar width and be a dick about it.” BTW, I just saw a shiny F150 in Temecula with the license plate BRAAAP. I’m thinking it’s a good chance it was LeeLikesBikes. If not, it should be.
