Been a while since a paid attention to lighting options. Saw this article on Velonews today.

Had to laugh at the insinuation of the subtitle, "We take a close look at five capable, versatile front lights for everything from winter commutes to occasional singletrack jaunts." that these 1000+ lumen lights were lacking as a dedicated mtbing light.

I'm sure some of you remember holding a candle in one hand while riding  ; but my first light was a 15 W Niterider (Trail Rat?) with maybe 200 lumens that I paid more for than any of the lights in the article.

Progress is cool.

Along these lines, I am getting ads for old school rotary generator bike lights now. Zinio apparently has determined I might bite. They do work more efficiently and are undeniably cool and nice, but do not seem better from a pure safety standpoint.

The last two years I might have been a bit overboard by running a 3500 Lumens on the left side bar, 2800 on the right, and 1100 on the lid.
Toned it down to 2000 on the bar and the 1100 up top. Wonder why the hikers get so pissed off
Found out they they are rain proof tonight

I get to see the meth heads early on to get to the bear spray before I need it

Yeah my first light was some sort of NiteRider I paid around $250 for and had a massive bottle size battery weighing a couple pounds. Then I got a newer one with a smaller rectangular battery at about half that weight, but still obnoxiously heavy compared to anything today. Magicshine and the cheap Chinese knockoffs were pretty revolutionary. I can't imagine paying more than about $50 for a light these days.

We started out night riding here by taking Cateye light bodies and installing a brighter bulb and then making an external battery bottle that we made from water bottles and lead acid batteries that we got at an industrial surplus store. That store was a great place, btw. For this effort we were rewarded with a whopping 7 watts of light, at a cost of maybe 40 bucks total. We couldn't imagine needing any more light than that, or spa we told each other.

Now I'm cruising with a 1700 lumen flood on the bar and an 800 spot on my helmet, and the poor homeless people often think the aliens have finally come for them when we ride by. Then they hate us.
