PSA:. I was stopped by a DFG warden this morning at the top of serpentine and had to talk my way out of a ticket. He saw me look at the fireroad access off serpentine and I saw him. I was heading back to actually talk to him about what is legal when I realized he wanted to ticket me. He initially said even serpentine is off limits but backed off that. He eased up and we had a decent talk after that. Another rider was there listening in. Officer Chang said he was called down from Riverside and the only reason they are even here is hikers kept complaining about bikers going by them too fast so enforce your rules DFG. He's cool but he wants to give out tickets and is looking. I thought the hikers being the squeaky wheel that brought down the increased enforcement was interesting.

And probably quite true. In the last year or so, I've had some "interesting" discussions about trail access and every one was a hiker.
The trail runners has been the best to deal with and the other MTB'ers honestly have been DBags at times, sad to say.
Trail rules and awareness needs to be discussed with the younger, newer, and just plain entitled to their trail bros on bikes. We are our own worst enemy

Kimba, I'm not sure where you were riding that a warden would stop you since Sepentine is all city property?

I know we all have busy lives (well, some of you) and schedules but in the current climate, I wouldn't even bother riding Calavera on a weekend. Too many hikers/walkers and obvious too many varieties of LE to bother with an area that while close to home, doesn't hold a candle to Greer, Noble or even Mel Brooks IMO.

For the record, the streets around Greer were PACKED today but the trails were virtually EMPTY. Zero hikers on the actual trail as well as no dogs or their tell-tale signs that they had been there  I wouldn't say Greer is "threatened" but it's a known fact that development is coming...an off ramp for Keller Rd is scheduled for 2021 and that will expedite all sorts of building. When it does, much of Greer will be excised so ride it while you can.

I was riding serpentine. He is not from here and did not know it was legal. Me and another rider eventually convinced him it was, we asked him if he cared if we rode it, he said no, so we did and left. He was initially in ticket mode but my incredible persuasive skills came into play :). Seriously, I just want you all to know they're still looking.

A little off topic but it was at the end of a gravel type ride from my house to Hosp through Robertson ranch and a few laps at Calavera back home. Since the DFG parcel is effectively gone in order to have fun and get a good ride in I've incorporated surrounding areas in my local ride. It's actually refreshing to ride new stuff with old stuff in a new way.

I wouldn't have worked to hard to convince him. Would have told him once time that you were on City land and he could go ahead and write the ticket and include whatever info/map he had to support it.

To this day nobody has shown a ticket and the first one being written incorrectly would help towards ending enforcement. Would be a great PR failure for CDFW.

Matthew, you are free go right ahead with what ever you choose to do. I chose to educate the guy and not to get a ticket. I don't appreciate the insinuation that I let anybody down even you by not getting a ticket. And this post is simply a PSA to help others.

you did not let anyone down, obviously you are free to do what you felt is right. I am not sure I would have forced him to give me an unlawful ticket, But I am sure I would read him the riot act for not knowing the proper boundaries and for harassing law abiding citizens. Your story makes me sooo angry at how this situation is turning out.

The only people CDFW should have been trying to ticket are the ones who cut new trails and built big jumps, the vast majority of riders who have frequented that place in the last 30 years had nothing to do with the trail cutting or jump building. It is bad behaviour on their part to be on the Cities land trying to enforce state rules that have no application for the city of carlsbad. I really hope someone relays this story at the next City Council meeting. Perhaps if the City sees that the state is harassing people outside of their jurisdiction they will start to do more than say sorry we can't help it is not our land.... This did happen on their land.

Mike,

I apologize if you felt I was implying you let anyone down. Certainly not. It was more a theoretical "What would I have done" Or a What I think I would have done.

Either way, the fact that you were confronted while still riding on Legal/City Land with the "Threat" of a ticket is not good.

I'm glad you are planning to attend and speak at the City Council meeting tomorrow. I am planning to attend, but as an Oceanside Resident, my speaking won't really make a difference.

Sounds to me like the situation was handled great.

The officer could have walked away thinking MTBs are jerks and its no wonder they need enforcement out there.
