Post subject:  Bike build for middle school MTB team
Hi guys, my son recently joined his middle school Mtb team and is really getting into it. He is currently riding a low end specialized hard rock. While it works pretty good, it’s pretty heavy with a useless fork and 3x8 setup. Since he is pretty light and is growing quickly I am considering do a father son build of a cheap Chinese hardtail and just swapping the components to a new frame as he grows. Does anyone have any experience with the Chinese carbon frames? Of course, I don’t want to sacrifice his safety to save a buck.

I built what is called the 057 frame with a rigid front fork, china carbon wheels, seat post, and bar, with an XX1 build.

You can ask around, I hammer it pretty hard, riding the same stuff I would on my SantaCruz TallBoy LT, even took it to Santa Cruz and rode the Flow Trail and some other trail, that you're not supposed to ride the direction I rode.

But since you say you have a 3x8 drive train, you'll probably want to throw that in the bin.

Depending on your budget, a China Carbon can still run over $2K depending on how you build it out.

A descent Fork is going to run you $500+, Carbon Frame w rigid fork, wheels, bar, seatpost, etc, will still be near $1500 delivered, component group $400+, misc, grips, stem, seat, tires, etc $200+.

The benefit is being able to build a $6+K bike for $2500-3000. Trying to build a sub $1K bike is much harder.

Thanks for the replies. They are really helpful. The canyon looks sweet but I am not willing to spend $2500 on a bike for an 11 year old.

Since he is only in junior high It doesn’t need to be that fancy. My goal is build to him something decent as cost effective as possible. We can even take our time and shop for used components. I will make him be part of the process so he can learn too.

That being said, if anyone has anything they are looking to unload that would be good for the build let me know. I am literally starting from scratch.

At 11, he'll probably outgrow whatever you get in a year, so just finding something good used is a better option, until he's at a size where he can keep a bike for a few years.
