It seems like those who have always ridden clipless often struggle when the try flats.

I've always ridden flats, and can't stand clipless, and did struggle with them when I tried them on a few rides. With practice, I might eventually get used to them, but there's no point for me to switch. I hate the feeling of being that connected to my bike, and would be sketched on technical stuff and jumping if I were clipped in. I need to be able to easily bale out!

The really good riders seem to be fine either way, and are sometimes faster clipped in (but I think many DH riders still swear by flats).

Maybe you should try a set of flats..... Hmmm....where's that how-to video on how to ride them. Oh wait. Put foot on pedal. Start spinning. (actually, you do have to move your foot further forward than what you'd be used to with clipless).

For me, I got really tired of turning my shins to hamburger with flats. Every hike-a-bike became a bloody mess. And with flats I always had foot pain from having the arch of my foot on the pedals instead of the ball.

I run clipped with the tension screws backed out significantly. So the only real benefits from these pedals are keeping the pedals on the balls of my feet, and no more hamburger shins.

This comment reminds me of when we had a weekly Cowles Mtn Big Rock Trail ride a few years back, Orven would pedal his M9 up Big Rock to the saddle and still get there before everybody else.

Sure, but they’d still be fast on flats.

When I posted, I was thinking that Orven and Skylar are the only two local fast riders, who come to mind, that are probably faster riding clipless.

I switched to flats back in late September after 25+ years on SPD's. My motivation was hiking in SPD shoes up & over Mt Elwell up in Downieville. It was a hellish nightmare and a swore when I got home I was going to buy 5-10's with clips. I did that but still wanted to try flats. I was going back and forth and what finally "flipped my switch" was a near ugly crash I almost had...but I was saved because I was on flats and was able to just push the bike away and land on my feet. That could have been a 10-15 drop back on solid rock otherwise.

I would never try to change anybody's mind but I will say, even if you ride clipless, go get some comfy 5-10 shoes. They are a game changer if you choose wisely.

Old news, but it's official. Flats are faster: https://www.pinkbike.com/news/sam-hill-goes-full-enduro-at-world-champs.html

(too bad the theory does not hold up for me...)
