Hey all, was planning to take my wife riding this weekend. Our original plan was to head to Laguna Meadows... she's a big fan of Los Gatos and the scenery and we usually hit Alpine Brewery on the way back.

However, somebody I met told me about the Santa Rosa Plateau near Murrieta. The few vids/pics I've seen online show a lot of flat fire roads but it's hard to get a sense of what's there. It looks a little boring to me but it's hard to tell.

My wife likes flowy trails with fun (ideally bermed) turns. She doesn't like climbing (especially the technical ones) but she's willing to do them if the downhill is fun. Rock gardens are doable but scary. Snake sightings instantly end the ride and should be avoided if at all possible.

Can you all give me the low-down on Santa Rosa Plateau and how it might compare to Laguna? I searched for and found a few old posts on SRP, but didn't really find quite what I was looking for.

thanks!
Mike

It's been a while since I ridden
Santa Rosa. It's pretty cool.
Rode BLT yesterday. No comparison
on my mind. Santa Rosa is ok if
you are in the area, not a destination
in my opinion.
BLT was awesome yesterday.

Santa Rosa is fairly flat and well boring in my opinion, especially compared to BLT/Los Gatos. If flowy berms are what you guys want, Teds really is good for that but it is hard riding and you need to know which ones. Easier flowy berms in the county with scenery are pretty much in the Lagunas. Montana de Oro SP, Oats Peak trail is what you seek but its 6 hours away...

I've not ridden there, but the Daley Ranch trails in Escondido seemed to read "fun descents." The Bobcat Trail in "back" of the Ranch seems like a lot of fun. It's on my list of to-dos.

Anyone have thoughts on Daley Ranch in this context?

^^^ SRP can be enjoyable, especially when it's beautifully green, but doesn't fit the trail description Inconceivable is seeking. CC, Daley Ranch has lots of up & down climbing, and some really nice fast single track trails, but they are not really flowy & bermed except a few sections. I think Weedpatch in San Clemente better fits the bill nearby. But sounds like she might like Big Bear.

You should go check it out. There could be a good place for lunch in the area.

Many thanks for the input everybody... this is indeed very helpful. One thing I somehow forgot to mention is that she likes good scenery. It may be, in fact, her primary reason for mountain biking. This is another reason why Laguna has worked so well for us in the past.

It seems like the consensus is that Santa Rosa is pretty boring, and the pictures I've seen in various pictures seem to back that up. With that in mind, we'll probably stick to Laguna. I like the Big Bear suggestion, and I'd like to check that out someday, and there's also that new biking area in Santa's Village too that's on my list. I still need to check out Ted Williams, but from what I hear that will probably scare her off.

By the way, sorry to ask a dumb question, but what does BLT stand for? Big Laguna Trail?

thanks!

Yes, BLT = Big Laguna Trail

It's not flowy but if you want the best scenery on the planet, take her to Sedona. As much as I like riding in the trees of Oregon (I also love BLT & Noble Canyon for best local scenery), Sedona blows me away every time.

Daley is know for it's challenging ruts & rocks as well, not to mention climbing Cardiac Hill which is the icing on the cake if you can "clean" the climb. I personally don't think Daley has much true single track but there is some. The best single track trail there has a couple names but I know it as Superman. It was once a great trail but so many enduro-bros have blown out every corner from skidding thru every turn. Others may disagree but I go to Daley when I want a good workout....and you'll get a good one in less than 90 minutes.

I was gonna offer but I re-read something about rock gardens and specifically snake sightings. Never mind.. Hahaha

Sure. See map of legal trails below. It is correct that most marked single track aren't "true" since they long ago were double track that's grown back. In the context of "fun descents" I would say Crest, Bobcat, and Burnt Meadow are the most fun. Bobcat is very fast and fun but leaves you with a hellacious climb back up if you parked at the main La Honda lot. Quail Run was really nice true single track when built but was pretty eroded last time I was there. Still okay, and the climb back up on Caballo isn't bad. Rock Ridge was once good but is probably still closed after being completely destroyed by spring rains. Coyote Run and Diamondback are okay, go west halfway down Coyote then up Diamondback as an option to cut out some fire road. You can really bomb down some fire road there, but beware of hikers.

The map is not a topo, so the downhill direction of the fun descents is:

Crest - north to south
Burnt Meadow - south to north
Bobcat - north to south
Quail Run - north to south

Hope that helps Copper Cable!

SART?

Not suggesting to do the whole thing, and have never been there meself, but the ride description and scenery seem to fit the bill if you can find a manageable chunk to ride.
