PETITION UPDATE

Why we are removing this petition

San Diego Mountain Biking Association
NOV 22, 2017 — Thank you for signing our petition regarding cycling at the Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve (CHER). Within a few days the response was outstanding getting the attention of many parties.

The petition was created to identify opportunities to open CHER for cycling. Last Friday (Oct 17th), the first step took place with SDMBA meeting with the land manager (CDFW) and USFW along with several environmental groups. The purpose of the meeting was to open discussion regarding usage of CHER along with potential solutions. While no agreements were made, all parties agreed to speak and look for a middle ground. To be honest, CHER will be a high hurdle with both sides emotionally invested. In early 2018, SDMBA will hold a meeting in Carlsbad bringing all parties together to further the dialog regarding CHER.

Due to progress in collaboration, SDMBA decided it was in everyone’s best interest to remove the petition. Working together is always our preference and best approach. However, SDMBA reserves the right to restart the petition if talks break down without a viable solution. Currently, we are cautiously optimistic and excited regarding next steps. It will be critical for the community to turn out in strength for the Carlsbad meeting. We will be in touch shortly regarding the date, time and location of this meeting. Stay tuned!

Thank you! Your voices were heard loud and clear!

I can't think of a good reason myself either. It will just increase the number of people wanting CV open which will help the cause

With Shea homes buying the Cantarini Ranch/Holly Springs property might be time to get in with them for trails in that area. All the environmental lawsuits were settled in favor of previous owner but permits all lapsed, have a feeling Cbad will try to fast track this, meaning 3 more years.

This is a good idea Jack. It would be great to see an updated project over view.

Was out today, stopped and talked with the Carlsbad Ranger and Trail Management guy (Forget his real affiliation). As others have said, these guys are actually fairly cool. What they did say, is they have NO authority to enforce on CDFW land, well not entirely, they can give a Written Warning, but they would probably only do the in an extreme case (IE. they caught you out there multiple times).
I asked if they knew anything about CDFW lands enforcement. They said that Ranger/Warden Gabe (Not Biker Gabe, but looks very similar from a distance) was removing features, brushing trails, etc. They even said something about SPIKES. I did not get any better info on the SPIKE comment or location, but that is kinda scary and dangerous if true.

I also saw the CDFW Ranger (warden, trail wrecker) out on the Berm trail. Specifically he climbed in the tree at the bottom, and was either hanging something or taking something down (I couldn't tell from where I was). He then proceeded up the hill a way to the big rock drop and started scraping/digging away, until he saw a group of 3 Teen aged riders. He went over and spoke with them. About 5 minutes later I ran into these kids and asked what conversation they had. They stated that he told them it was all illegal and could be a Misdemeanor and $1000 Fine. He did not ask them for any ID's or anything, so they were just off riding in a different direction.

That's what I was thinking, but I didn't venture over to look as he was still nearby. From a distance it looked like he may have hung a sign or something across the trail, as it appeared to be something shiny hanging about head or higher level.

What are the laws about getting injured on state property from deliberately placed "traps" while trespassing?

Just to beat a dead horse. I heard some grumblings on the trail last night that seem to more than fake news. Looks like there are ~1000 homes being put in south of the creek on the Cantarini Holly Spring property and Cannon Rd will eventually be built through. Sorry if I'm late to the party, but has this been fully approved by Carlsbad? sad. What Carlsbad really needs is more house. :(

I know College will go through. Cannon is less likely.
