It's not that simple and this above statement is what many who don't understand or have very limited or selective understanding of how land development and planning works in CA (or in land development/planning within federal jurisdiction in CA) hang their marching fight hat on.
The same reason we mountain bikers (with many competent professionals and even lawyers) are not taken seriously because we seem disrespectful of the due process. Don't hate the players, hate the game.

On one hand, developers, these firms are for profit -PERIOD. They need to appease the community, City entitlement and construction process and CEQA process. USFWS/CDFG don't intervene in any of these entitlement unless the project footprint has potential or identified impact or incidental take on a surveyed habitat or specie. CDFG does not patrol every open space and impose their will unless a project triggers their consultation and approval or approval with mitigation measures under CEQA process -many many many public input and participation come in play during this part of the process. Lastly, the City or approving local agency (County too)- their hands are legally tied behind their backs because if the project proponent (developer/s) could demonstrate that 1) the project complies with all applicable zoning, general plan and design guidelines and 2) avoided or could mitigate for their environmental impact/s (buying credits in established mitigation banks OR set aside open space to establish habitat), the City/County has to deem the project complete (as required in the CEQA process). From there, the project is heard before the commission or council where it could be passionately debated. Fuck... It's really not that simple. Short end of it.

Policies need to be amended. Language, terminologies, standards, etc. Trail classification need to be amended as well. Anyway, I'm bowing out because I'm not bored anymore and need to stop typing. You guys are right. Fight on.

:)

I think we are getting trolled somehow... no signs, no rangers, no destruction.

In the past my experience has been that CDFW mobilized rapidly, does immersive damage
to whatever trail(s) is on their radar, then leaves for another couple of years.

With all this talk about their hostile presence, I haven't seen them do a single dam thing to
the usual hot spots... FLOW

Who is the dude on DT that says "ride it till they over it"? Well I am officially adopting that saying.

Bang on the money. A huge frustration for me is seeing so called bike advocates barking at the moon.

To be effective, you have to learn the process, the regs etc etc. That same process that appears to cock block trails is the same process that can force new trails.

Gotta work the system to your advantage. . .

Email today:

Lake Calavera Preserve Improvements Project Update

You are receiving this email because you have indicated your interest in the improvements being made to Lake Calavera Preserve.

Herbicide Application Planned for June 2

The removal of non-native invasive Mexican fan palms and Brazilian pepper trees from the northeast part of the preserve is now complete. Native vegetation has been planted in its place and is flourishing.

Crews will be on site on Friday, June 2 (weather permitting) to spot treat all non-native species that are cropping up in the project area. An EPA-approved herbicide will be used and will be applied directly to the non-native species. This will help the native species continue to establish without the threat of being overrun by non-native species.

Ongoing Maintenance

Please note there is ongoing, routine maintenance at the preserve, including some herbicide application, which is not associated with the palm grove removal and native plant restoration project.

More Information

For more information, including a comprehensive frequently asked questions document, please visit www.carlsbadca.gov/trails or call 760-602-2780.

So there was this:

http://www.cbs8.com/story/35633713/popular-carlsbad-trails-may-soon-be-off-limits

I know there are a number of Dirt Treaders who ignore that thing called Facebook, but that is where SDMBA does most of their communication now, since their forum is virtually dead. And there is more Calavera discussion lately on the MTBR forum than here. SDMBA has opened discussion with DFW about legal access at Calavera, and is seeking input from locals this Wednesday evening. Contact them if you are interested.

Think the felled trees are a trap?? Cut them down, later find them used by Mtn Bikers in trail features? Scream Foul and shut it all down??
